My son (3 years old) has been put on the two of these together. Has anyone else out there been on the two of these. Any news about either of them would be great.

I have been on topamax for about a year now - with good sucess.

It has 2 side effects that you need to be aware of - especially in a child so young.

1. It does have a tendency to cause seizures in those that it does not work for. So if you find that your son is having more seizures when on this drug, especially after an increase, mention it to his neuro - it may be the drug.

2. It is an appetite suppressant, having just been approved by the FDA as such. You may find that your son has lost his appetite - this is normal. If it gets to the point where he has lost more than say, 10 lbs. He will need to be taken off the drug becuase it is not good for him metabolically.

Hope this helps.

Thank for the info. He gained weight on the Depakote and was very sleepy. But he keep having drop seizures. In the middle of the afternoon so the neuro. added Topamax to maybe stop these. The started him on just 25mg twice a day. That didn't work so now it's 40 mg twice daily.
Depakote he tryed taking every 12 hours but that didn't seem to work either. So just last week after he had the bad spells the neruo. wanted to try giving him it 3 times a day that seems to be working better.

When they switch medicine around does it take about a week for your body to get used to it??? He is a totally different kid after about a week.

Some times it takes longer - I was on neurontin awhile back and it took almost 7 months for me to finally get to the dose that was beneficial - and then when I got there I found out that during that whole time I was a zombie. I was not the person I was supposed to be. I had turned into someone else.
