Insertion= Okay I'm not going to lie to you. Don't eat very much before you go. You will feel like your going to puck. It's almost a nerve reaction. It does hurt(a lot) for about a minute, depending if it gets stuck (mine did but only because I had a LEEP surgery and I had scare tissue)(I also have not had a baby so it wasnt stretched at all). You cramp a lot for the first two hours. I kept thinking it was going to get pushed out, but I woke up this morning and the cramping is almost gone. Just stalk up on motrin.

I'm thinking of getting one, too. I'm worried my BirthControl is making me gain weight, especially after they put me on Sprintec insted of OrthoCyclen. Thats not the only reason - I have no desire for children as well.
So how is it going now that it's been a few months? Any problem, what about infection. Do you have any other health concerns that made it a difficult decesion? I'm type 1 diabetic, and have been since I was 10 so I'm worried about infection. Any advice would be great!

I have only had it for a little over two weeks. So far so good. Doc cut the strings really short so I freaked when I couldnt find them...but I guess you have to lay on your back to get to them. Cramps lasted 3 days...and then my pants pressing on my uterus hurt, but all that is gone now. No complaints so far....waiting till Aunt Flow is due to see if it increases cramps.

The only health problem they were concerned with was the previous LEEP which just made it hard to insert. Nothing else to report.

Ive had the Mirena for about a month and a half and no complaints. I got mine about 8 weeks after having my baby and I dont have any complaints on it.

I have had the paraguard for almost 7 years now. I just had it removed last week to have another baby. I had 2 babies before I got mine. It did not hurt to have it inserted or removed. Nerves really freaked me out bad. You always expect it to hurt more than it does. The paraguard lasts 7 to 10 years. It looked exactly the same as it did when it was put in. I expected some discoloration or something after 7 years. I did have a friend who had the mirena. She had it for a year and a half. She got it removed because she kept gaining weight. She had put on 50lbs. After 2 weeks she had already lost 10lbs. Everybody is different though. I have LOVED MINE!!!!! In fact, after having baby 3 I will probably get another one. We had only planned on 2 and then we have done alot of talking since the last one was born. That was one benefit of having an IUD. You can have it removed to have more children without surgery, unlike having tubes tied. Anyway, Goodluck!!! Feel free to ask questions.

Okay, few questions:

-How much does it cost, the device and the procedure?
-Can you feel it inside you, when you have sex/do sit ups/ at all?
-Did either of you get PID?
-What exactly is a paraguard ?

Thanks for the other information!

1. mine was $400 for everything total. Sounds pricey yes but in the end your saving.
2. I could never feel it. Occasionally my husband would get stuck with the strings. My doc had cut my strings too short. Besides that it's like it's not there.
3. No. I was put on an antibiotic after insertion just in case. No problems at all.
4. The paraguard is a plastic t with copper wrapped around the ends. No hormones. Still have periods and all. It has been out for awhile. The mirena wasn't available at the time I had gotten mine. I would still choose the paraguard again. I liked the fact that there wasn't any chemicals/hormones going into my body.

I NEVER WANT TO HAVE CHILDREN!!! I can't express this thought any more. I got an IUD put in earlier this year and LOVE it!!! Mine wasn't covered my insureance so overall it cost me around $1300. IMHO it was well worth it for many reasons. It is cheaper than having a child (both financially and mentally). I lost a a ton of weight after I stopped taking the pill (20 lbs.). I don't have to worry about taking a pill every day.

I am not going to lie...it didn't feel good when I had it inserted. I was told by my doc that it probably burt more for me b/c I have never had children. I have also heard that some docs will not insert an IUD for a women that has never had a child. My husband has never felt the string. I do check it a few times a week to make sure it is in place. I thought it was lost one time and went in to see my doc. It was still in place but was stuck in the mucus around my cervix (Yuk).

Feel free to ask any question you want. Good luck!!!

Does Mirena really cause weight gain. The script said it wouldnt! That was one of the reasons I got off the pill because so I could get rid of the hormones. Mirena is supposed to just have the progest in the uterus. Very little gets into the blood stream?

Don't get it - infections are common and easy with the mirena, They are called Bacterial Vaginois and they are very uncomfortable and stinky. Find some other form of birthcontrol - but Mirena has been a horable decsion for me and I have had two doctors assure me that it has been horable for many other women also.

Yes, mirena causes weight gain and mood swings. If it sounds to good to be true...then it probably is.

I have had Mirena for one year....I have had horrible mood swings, anxiety that was not present before and reoccuring bacterial vaginosis that had to be treated....never had that before either. I admit that I have never typically done well on the pill either but that is why I was literally - "talked into the mirena - it cost $500." I think my Dr was getting kickbacks or something becuase I have talked to two other Doctors since that time and they said that they would never recommend mirena because it is very common for women to have problems tolerating the changes in their bodies after they are inserted. I think Mirena runs a very good ad campaign and spin about it's product but it has serious flaws. It seems like a good idea intil you realize after several months how much it has altered your life and your body. Get at least three Doctors advice - reputable before you take on the Mirena - I should have.

The weight gain is one reason why i would go back to the Paraguard anyday.

Spaz- don't freak out. Everybody is different. You may not have any problems and love it. This is just what I have heard and what has happened to prettylonglegs. It may not happen to you. Time will tell. Goodluck!!!!!

Hello, I figured I would post this if anyone has any questions. I was on Loestrin FE for about 11 years. I was very happy with it overall but wanted to try something different because I felt as though I had a few added pounds and it decreased my sex drive. I had the IUD put in about a year ago. It is very uncomfortable going in so brace yourself. You will be very crampy for the rest of the day. In any case, it was very convenient as far as not having to worry about it and the cost of not having to get birth control pills every month. Today I had it taken out for a few reasons: very heavy periods, extreme cramps (pre labor if you know what I mean) and a very disgusting discharge - it was like muccus but very clear. It was really just a nuisance!!! Very simple coming out however, just a strange cramp. I am going to try Yaz and go from there!!

Well,

I have had my IUD for 4 months now. Getting off regular BC gave me my acne back but Doxycycline is taking care of that. I have not gained a single pound. Also my craps are not half as bad as they were and my Aunt Flow is hardly there although I get some breakthrough bleeding. No pills, no ring. It's great for me and I've had lots of problems with BC. I think the next two months will bring on no periods (crossing fingers). So far I love it. If you have question u are free to ask me.

well i have had the copper iud for about a year and a half and it seems about a month or 2 after insrtion i develpoed this nasty most embarressing odor and burning that i have yet to rid of. this isafter seeing 4 different drs and having numerous swabs and testing to have not one of these dr's be able to tell me whats wrong with me. the odor comes and goes and its something thatg i have NEVER smelt before and ive asked my b'f and he says it kind of smells like meat. but it is horrific and its wont leave me alone so im afraid that my only conclusion would be to blame it on the iud and that its not reacting to my body well at all. i too feel like i have anxiety and very nervous around people but no weight gain. im at my wits end and im almost positive im haveing it removed very shortly. its killing my sex life and embarresses me daily so i just stay home all the time and leads to depression. good luck or try to have better luck than myself :(

I just had my mirena put in 5 days ago. So far, I haven't had any s/e's and I'm very sensitive to the pill or ring! I was terrified going into it because I had read all these horror stories on the web. I've had two kids and didn't feel a thing! My doctor numbed my cervix and those little pinches from the needle was the worst part of it. I only bled very lightly for the remainder of that day and the next morning had some faint spotting. That was all. My doctor said it can really hurt if you haven't had kids and if they don't numb your cervix.

I decided to get Mirena after having my second child. He is now a year old, so it's almost been a year with Mirena. I am seriously thinking of having it removed soon. My periods went from very normal to really strange. I knew this was to be expected, but I bled heavily on and off for almost a straight 6 months. Now I'll have a moderate period for about 2 or 3 days about twice a month. I'd rather have a normal trackable period! Also in the past few months especially, I have been very bloated almost every day. That is the reason I came on this board.....to see if anyone had experienced weight gain....and I guess so! I was at 183 pounds at the end of my 2nd pregnancy, and at the end of 6 weeks postpartum, was 157. I thought I would lose more, but I have gained about 3 pounds and CANNOT lose it no matter what I do! I'm glad I found this board because the manufacturer states that weight gain is not associated with Mirena.....I think that is WAY too good to be true. If there are any other cases of weight gain, please feel free to reply so I don't feel like I am the only one in the world experiencing this....lol!

I would only opt for the Paraguard Copper IUD, it can remain in -for up to 12 years if you wish, it has NO hormones at all, it is also cheaper than the Mirena one--which can only be in for up to 5 years I think. Only bad side to the Copper IUD is, it can make your periods heavier and crampier, but then for some women, that usually lasts only a few months -so your uterus gets used to this foreign object. My Aunt had one of these and it worked great for her, she had it taken out after many years and had her one and only child at 42 yrs old. So after having my 6 kids, I decided to get this Copper IUD also, I choose this over Tubal Ligation after much researching. I had my IUD insertion 6 weeks after delivering my last son. I was terrified of the insertion , so I asked for a Cerivial Block, which they had ready for me, but instead they used this stuff called "Hurricane spray" to numb me down there, told me I would not really need the Needle (cervical Block) so I laid there and the worst part was a Large severe cramp lasting moments, then after it was inserted, I slowly bled enough to fill a small pad ,and panty liners for the last 2 days. Today is only "day 3" after insertion, so far so good. I have had ZERO cramps after my insertion, it seems everyone is different. All women should give themselves at least 3 - 4 months with these IUDs to see how the body/uterus responds to them, it is supposed to get better, I have heard alot of GOOD expereinces, you know how it is, the bad make it to the internet. Just make sure you are a good candidate for one of these.... only 1 partner , one husband who is free from sexual diseases, etc. My OBGYN said the reason the Dalkon sheild had such problems in the past is because they were putting these IUDS in anyone who wanted them, and so many women went on to get PID (Pelvic Immflamotory Disease)--which can cause a host of problems to the woman, even infertility. Docs need to screen patients and warn them of the hazards if they have multiple partners, etc. PLus the Doc should ask you if you are allergic to Copper, their is a condtion called Wilson's Disease, these people can not have the Paragauard Copper IUD inserted.

I got my IUD at the end of August of 2006. I thought it would be great judging by what my husband and I have read about it. I have always had problems with weight gain sense my first pregnancy but have been able to keep it under control for the most part. So far sense I have had the IUD I have gained about 22 pounds which is devistating to me. I went from a size 16 to a size 20. Also sense I have had the IUD I have had daily headaches, nausea, dizznes, bloating, cramping and my legs ache. I feel like I am pregnant all over again. I also have mood swings like you wouldn't believe {my pour kids} and a lack of sex drive. I am depressed most of the time that I can't keep things together at my house anymore and most of the time I am so agitated that I don't want to be touched by anyone and my sex drive is next to nothing {my pour husband}. I always thought that maybe my IUD has had something to do with it but after talking to my doctor a few times I was assured time and time again that it has nothing to do with it. I am to the point now that there has got to be some answers somewhere and after searching the web and a few diffrent chat rooms I guess there are a lot of people having the same problems that I have. So I am leaning towards getting it removed. Now my only concern is what to use in its place. I have had 3 kids and my husband has 3 kids from his last marriage and I have custody of all 6. I am only 26 years old and my kids range from almost 9 clear down to 9 months. The last thing I think I can handle right now is more kids or ever for that matter. I think the family I have is enough. So maybe to avoid all side effects I should have my tubes tied or have my husband fixed.

Any thoughts to help make my decision easier?

I am assuming the IUD you are talking about is the hormonal one, Mirana, you did not say?? I have the copper, I have not experienced anythign like that , all is the same emotionally, sex drive, weight etc. Also when I asked my Doc about the Mirana, they said it does not have the side effects the way the pill does, because it is in the Uterus, or something, but I have read so many posts about problems with that one, I think the docs don't know, or not enough study on this one, only been out a few years, maybe 5 I think, Copper one has been out for over 20 yrs, the Paraguard.

So I'm not as happy as I thought with it. Nothing is clearing up the acne and I'm starting to get scars from it. The boob pain side effect went away but came back. I think it may have been causing me to get migraines as well. I always forget to think about it cuz I forget I have it. It also was making sex a little uncomfortable in certain positions...I've realized I miss them. So I get it out June 4th.
