I have just begun switching my main drug from Dilantin to Tegretol because I had a dangerously low platelet level. My eyes are crossed and I feel drunk. Does this get better? Does anyone on Tegretol get the feeling they are stupid or at least much slower minded than they were before being on any anti-seizure medicine(s)? I had that feeling with Dilantin.

Also, are there any opinions about getting off Neurontin? My neurologist doesn't like the drug, but I figure it's not harming anything so I'd like the extra security blanket.

My son was on Phenobarb and Dilantin at the age of 6 months. When the time came that he was old enough for another medication, the process was to wean him off of phenobarb and add the Depakote and leave the Dilantin alone. So, essentially, I had a 20 month old baby on ALL THREE at once. He immediately started throwing up after every dose of medication and still stayed 'drunk' all of the time. My best guess is that you're suffering from withdrawl from one, and your body is re-adjusting to the new. He was then taken off of Dilantin and they added Tegretol. That left him taking Depakote and Tegretol. I was adamant that if ONE medication would work, then we were going with one. I won't tell you to do what I did in both cases (I stopped the phenobarb cold turkey-no more throwing up AND I took him off of the depakote cold turkey against the doctors 'better' judgement and had no problems doing either) but I just knew in my heart that they had never helped him anyway. If your Dilantin controlled your seizures then I would definately wean yourself off of it properly, but in my experience, the Tegretol is the best medication he's ever been on. Not only does it control his seizures, he came out of his drunken stooper he had been in for 2 years on other medications. I also have a brother-in-law who takes Tegretol (he's 25) and he says once he got used to it, he can't tell any difference. I know some doctors will allow people to stop their meds cold turkey as long as they have a good level of the other medication in their bodies, but this is done in a hospital setting. Don't know if this helped much, but your body is probably just on overload and you should be fine once you're not on three meds. Good Luck!

I have been on Tegretol and Neurontin for four years now and have no problems. In the beginning, I had to adjust to it, but now I feel fine and I take the max dosage of Tegretol and a pretty high dosage of Neurontin (not the max). It has been almost 3 years since my last seizure and I'm doing great. I hope this helps you! Good Luck and let me know if you have any more ques.
