I have just started taking Topamax about 3 weeks ago and have had a few side effects. The worst one is the change in taste. I have an awful taste in my mouth and everything I drink or eat has a metal like after taste to it. I'm hoping this is temporary. Has anyone been taking this any longer than 3 weeks?

I've been on it for almost a year - its been great for me. No side effects other than appetite suppresion (which I LOVE!)
Can't say that I've ever heard of that side effect. I hope it gets better for you http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif
If it last another week I'd bring it up with your neuro, that may mean it is 'aggrevating' an area of your brain, which is a known side effect.
Wishing you luck!

Appetite suppression, weight loss, and aggitation have been the side effects I've experienced with Topamax. I've been taking it for almost 4 years now, and I do have "olfactory" auras, which affect the sense of smell, but nothing which changes my sense of taste.
Medications do affect each of us in different ways, so that could be what is causing the problem. Best wishes.

Hi, I've had to go back on Dilantin recently, having been "loaded" with it at the ER. I have had the taste things happen to me....more at the start of my meds and less now. To me food would taste a little "off"...like it was starting to go bad. I'm thinking that it is cause by the way these meds affect our brain. Good Luck, CAT

Could I ask how many mgs you are taking,,,,when did the appetite supression start...so far I've had none....Supposed to be helping get rid of my headaches and so far it's making them worse...is this a side effect that eventually wears off...Also was told it helps with anxiety, but haven't seen that yet either...maybe I'm on too low of a dose for all of these.

Ive been on Topamax now for 6 mos. I have had no experience in change of taste. I have tho had an increase of thirst and a craving for ice water. I drink it all the time! Also I have noticed a decrease in my appetite.
The medication has tapered my siezures down quite a bit. I was having between 3 to 8 a week, I am now having between 2 and 4 a week.
