View Full Version : Expert needed to answer question about Sepsis

My husband died on Oct.14 from septic shock.Because of Renal failure his body was unable to fight off an E Coli infection that started in the urinary tract. It turned septic and caused him to have a heart attack. There was too much damage for him to recover so we took him off life support and he died. What I am trying to find out is if the doctor did something wrong in his treatment or if it was just a judgment call that turned out to be wrong. On Tues.Oct.10 he was given antibiotics(gent. and vanc.)because he had chills and a fever. They did a blood culture. On wed. he had a doctor appointment with his regular MD and he felt okay.On Thur.he went to dialysis at 10 and at 11 said he wanted to go the hospital. He was given oxygen in the ambulance.Once there they did blood work and took urine to culture.About noon they told me that he was going to the ICU because he had sepsis infection.I asked them what that was and they said it was a blood infection.By the time they got him to the ICU and got him settled in it was 1:00PM.Then they brought in the machines to finish dialysis.I questioned this because I thought he needed to get started on antibiotics. They said that they would be starting antibiotics after the dialysis treatment(you can't do both at the same time because dialysis would just remove the antibiotics). It ended up to be between 4 and 5 hours before he got antibiotics.Everything I have read says that for Sepsis antibiotics need to be started within the first 2 hours.I think the doctor made a mistake by finishing dialysis first.Maybe I just need someone to blame but that is what I am trying to find out.I need someone who is an expert in this to tell me if things were done right and I should just drop this or if the doctor was wrong and I should take it further.Sorry this was so long but I wanted to make sure that everything was in the right order.
