my son was just recently dx'd with ADHD/ODD. Tomorrow morning we go to start on medication. don't know which ones they will start him with.

Any suggestions??? any NOT to take...side effects....etc.
as i have read that effexor is not good

my son is 12.

Theres nothing anyone can really advise for or against, every case is different so therefore no one can tell you for sure that he won't react a certain way 100% of the time to a certain medication, its mainly trial and error with minimal risk

Well........appt. went pretty good, i guess. she started him on Stratera and Traxadone for sleep, as he is having an awful time sleeping at nite.
She also thinks that his behaviors may be from not enough sleep and an panic/anxiety disorder. But.......of course it's all error of elimination. she said that if the stratera does not work and he gets worse while on it.......to stop it immed. & it's then she'll know it's not ADHD. She finds it strange about the ADHD because no one on my side of the family, or his father, uncle or grandparents don't have it. so i guess it's petty much hereditary???
Anyway........i'm just hoping that we hit the nail on the head already, and these problems will resolve SOON.

yeah, it can be hereditary, but new studies suggest it may also be caused by inhaling smoke at a young age and it could be that he just happened to be unlucky and got it for a reason that is unknown to us as of now, or as the doc said, it could be a different disorder thats just giving off the same symptoms as ADHD

First nite after taking the Trazadone to help him sleep, he said that he slept ALL nite, and he felt much better this morning.
Started first dose of Strattera this morning too.

I was sooooo angry yesterday. I went to pick up his medication, and his ins. company does not cover the Strattera. So i called the doctor back that prescribed it, and after the 2nd time @ about 3pm..........i actually spoke to a person and she told me that everyone was gone or was leaving TIL MONDAY!!! well, needless to say.......i went off!!! i had waited 2 weeks for this appt., and now they were telling that i had to wait til monday....5 days away.........to have them get an override for the straterra!!!
OMG! i was furious!! can ya tell.........LOL

So i called his PCP, esplained the situation, and he gave me 3 weeks worth of samples!!

I was stressing about this most of the day yesterday. but i'm glad it's all better now......LOL

We'll see if today is ANY better from him getting a good nites sleep.

Hope everyone had a Happy Turkey Day!! we did :)

This is only day 2 of taking the Strattera and tonight will be nite 3 for taking the Trazadone and OMG!!.....i can already see a difference in him! so does my mother, who watched him today. she said it was a very good and pleasant day with him.

Nurse Practioner told us that if he didn't have the ADHD, that the Strattera would not work and by day 3 it would show........he would be acting worse. I don't see that happening, that is tomorrow.

I hope i'm not jumping the gun here on his behavior. But i'll tell ya's...........he has NOT argued with me, and has done things i've asked WITHOUT any argueing!!! I hope it continues this way. I guess the real test will be Monday at school. I hope it's the same and better there. As i have already seen an improvement in him.
