I would be interested in hearing from people that had a double or a single disc fusion and had the bone harvested from their hip, rather than donor bone used. Can you tell what to expect as far as the whole deal? (pain, recuperation, and anything else you would care to share). Thanks, I really appreciate it and HAPPY THANKSGIVING

Hi
I am going to have mine done on Nov 29th..2 possibly 3 disks. The doc said that they dont use bone from other people anymore it will be my own as well. They will be putting it into a plastic disks.
So I am curious as well on this issue.
When do you go??

I've had donor bone and have had bone grafted from my hip. The donor bone wouldn't fuse and caused the first fusion to fail. The graft from my hip for the revision surgery fused fine. As far as discomfort from the harvest site. To be honest, I barely noticed that anything had been done. It just wasn't that much of an issue. My opinion is that your own bone is better. Monty

I dont have a surgery date yet. My surgeon appt. is Dec. 19th. so I am probably looking at a 2 month wait from now, till my surgery.:dizzy:

I've heard of others having alot of trouble with it, but I've had my hip bone used 3 times with minimal pain. It does have a higher rate of fusion, but not by a wide margin.

I believe the higher rate of fusion with your hip bone is due to your bone still potentially having active cells in it by the time they get it in your neck - I read this somewhere. But who knows, your surgeon's proceedure may involve something like a cage or a peek (peak?) not sure of the spelling.. and he just used my bone chips accumulated from surgery and puts that in the center of this cage or peek and then taps the whole thing in like you would a bone graft. He said that this process had been working out really well, and it makes the surgery shorter.
But if you go the hip route, its just my opinon, but I think its safer, especially after that bone bank scandel... unapproved bone and contaminated from the bone bank and given to people without their knowlege, people were getting things like hepatitus... He actaully brought up the bone scandel to me. But as this scandel seems now to be cleared up, it might be okay - just wouldn't be my cup of tea.

I,ve had 3 surgeries and used my own bone all 3 times. The 3rd time the surgeon used crushed coral (from the ocean) to fill in the divot left in my hip.
The hip hurt less than the neck in all 3 cases. Just make sure not to make quick sudden turning motions and take stairs slowly because the hip can be painful if you hit it or twist it suddenly. The worst pain I experienced was after a hard sneeze. It brought me to my needs it hurt so bad for a couple minutes. Overall using your own bone makes the fusion quicker and is worth it. The pain is minimal or non existant.

You will some issues walking the first few days due to the hip donor site pain. But no big deal. You will not sleep on that side side for several weeks but that's it. I'm three months post op and have been given the green light to start skiing again in Jan. I broke my neck skiing and hence the reason for ACDF.
I will refrain from Mcwists and 720's, but that's it!
If you fall, get back on the horse and ride again!
:) Good luck!

I had acdf c5 -6 with own bone, and plate and I found the hip was the least of my issues. You will be fine. It is sore but not unbearable and why tempt fate by using that of others. For what it does to you it is worth the aggravation to give fusion a chance which is the goal. I only notice three years later this past November that it looks like someone took a little bite out of the crest of my hip. I did accidentally wack my hip on that side on the kitchen island which is marble and I almost passed out...but that probably was just because it will always be a little more sensitive. Otherwise all in all the surgery was incredibly worth it for me. Go for it..

Your doc is wrong. They do more cadaver bone graphs than not anymore due to using BMP with many spinal surgeries now.
