Hi. My 5 year old has a history of mastoiditis at the age of 1, and was in the hospital. He had tubes at that time, and he was free from ear infections for a few years. This year, he started to get them back, and in the last 4 months we have tried at LEAST 5 antibiotics, which have not cleared the infection. He has ruptured the ear drum, and has had problems hearing.
Anyways, the ENT believes that due to his mostoid history, he will have long term problems and has scheduled his mastoids to be removed, as well as permanant tubes, rather than temporary ones. He said the draw back to these tubes are that if it comes out, there might be a problem with a hole in the ear drum. He said that he usually has not put these in kids for this reason but given his history he would like try this.
Does anyone have experience with this? Is mastoid removal a standard thing, and will it actually help? Any advise would be great!!
thanks in advance.
