View Full Version : Pressure in the head - scared

Hi everyone,

I am new here and will appreciate any feedback regarding my condition.

I am a migraine sufferer since the age of 13. Mostly my migraines are associated with periods (hormonally related) or triggered by warm Chinook winds (I live in Calgary, Alberta).

In July me and my husband lost our first pregnancy - a baby girl - at 20 weeks of gestation due to complications of Turner syndrome. I had delivered her via stimulated birth, without obvious complications to my health. At first I was feeling 'normal' (except for awful breast engorgement because of milk production, but then it went away).

While the loss of our baby had tremendous negative impact on me, my husband and our immediate families, I seemed to be doing 'ok' - I returned to work almost immediately and continued to do quite well professionally and at at home. To keep myself busy I signed up for a professional certificate program with quite a rigorous schedule. However, in a few months I felt as if I started falling apart.

In October I noticed that from time to time I had pressure inside my head and extreme pressure on my eyes at times. If I left the office and walked outside, it felt as if I did not belong to this world anymore, I could hardly register with it. Testing at work (they do it every year) showed somewhat elevated blood pressure (133/90) and somewhat lowered good cholesterol. I went to see my family physician about that and told him about my symptoms. He said he did not think I had an issue with my health, rather with the changing weather.

This pressure on the eyes made me do the eye test, which mostly turned out ok, except that my intraocular pressure was the high range of normal. The eye doctor told me to come in a month to do further testing, as she wanted to rule out possible glaucoma or whatever was causing that.

Meanwhile I became more aware of this pressure in my head. While the weather indeed seems to be quite awful (jumping from -10 to almost + 11 in a few days), I did not feel anything like that before, despite all the history with migraines. What is interesting is that pressure comes and goes during the day, often changing during a shorter period of time - say, a few minutes of pressure and then totally clean and 'normal' feeling. I noticed that sometimes I feel 'warm' after such a fit, and that pressure is not really localized - I noticed it around my eyes, sometimes close to ears, in the back part of my head, in the top part of my head. I noticed that if I have to quickly think about something, it does not seem to occur, but if I kinda try to relax and concentrate on myself, I feel it. I also noticed that I don't feel it when I am taking a relaxing juniper bath, and that sometimes my ears are stuffed, as if I am travelling in a plane. Also, when it is a bit more strong, I almost feel like I am having a panic attack - because I think that what if it is cancer? As well, I feel a little shaky, when walking, sort of dizzy.

I seem to be having a hard time trying to persuade my family doctor to send me to an MRI ... I will do my best to do it again. I am one of those people who, if new things like that happen, seem to think the worst. And I've read quite a few stories when people were misdiagnosed and it was too late when finally the correct diagnosis was made.

I would appreciate if anyone could share their thoughts and experience (if any). Thank you very much.

Hey I am new on this site but I have the exact same symptoms of you and they are sending me to have a cat scan.

Thank you for replying ... How did your scan go? My MRI is normal, and the headaches minimized ... I also turned out to have high blood pressure ...

Vicky, I think you are most definitely suffering from stress headaches. I think if you do some stress techinques to minimize the stress in your life then your headaches will go away. I also think the loss of your baby has impacted your headaches. Do you have any neck pain?
