Has anyone had seizures due to low sodium or potassium?

Low sodium and potassium are sometimes caused by siezures i think dont quote me i will reasearch it. but im almost sure when my son had a tonic clonic for 3 1/2 hours he was ventilated and his levels were abysmal.

So I don't know what the scoop on sodium is either, but I have lower and lower levels of it myself. I developed epilepsy about 6 months ago, which was about 9 months after a brain surgery in which I had a tumor removed. Anyway, I've been on trileptal since October, 2000 and have had decreasing sodium levels ever since. I also have odd hallucinations and blurred vision problems sometimes, and am exhausted very easily. Are any of you on trileptal, and experiencing similar problems as me? It is VERY frustrating!!! I am a graduate student at Princeton University and find it really hard to cope with all of my work. Anyone have any ideas?

My daughter is on trileptal, and they said it eats her sodium level. It is like Tegretol--she had blurred vision on that one. She goes in for an MRI tomorrow. She is also on zongram--she has complex seizures--hard time controling them, and she hasn't been able to drive for a year. I feel so bad for her. It is hard. She gets tired. Good luck.

I took trileptal for about 6 weeks. I just quit because my doctor thought I was having an allergic reaction to it -- subtle rash, itchy ears, etc... Anyway, I had blurred vision a couple of times. I did some experiments. It seemed to be tied to caffeine. I stopped having caffeine near the time I took my medicine and I stopped having blurred vision. I could have caffeine later and it didn't matter. Maybe just a coincidence.

The potassium thing is a big mystery to me. I had very low potassium when I had my second seizure. I asked the Neurologist if low potassium could cause a seizure and he said no. Later, when I looked it up in a medical book, it said that hypokalemia (low blood potassium) can cause heart palpitations (which I had been complaining about for months) and seizures! It would be interesting if we could survey everyone on this board to see how many of us actually had low potassium and/or sodium during a seizure.
