My girlfriend started takin BC pills a week ago today. She's taken them at the exact same time every day, except last wednesday. She took the pill 10 minutes later than she usually does. We'd like to have sex this wednesday, are we covered? Or do we need to wait longer for the pills to start working?

I think you guys are fine. And 10 minutes is no biggie, but if you take it more then a few hours off schedual it doesn't keep the hormones regulated.

Thanks. she was about 10-15 minutes late last nite too. Other than those nights, she's been exactly on time. Approx. how long can you be off of your usual time and still have the pill work? 30 minutes? longer? And for what day does the pill you take today protect you for? Does it protect you for the next day, or what? Also, is there any proof that the BC pills are working? any symptoms to look for? We didn't end up having sex last wednesday, so we're gonna see if we can get time this wednesday. Even with her being on pills, im still using a condom.

I am on Yasmin and it says take it within 3 hours of the time or it can start being off. So 10 minutes is definitely okay.. even an hour is. Just taking it like way later in the day (night instead of morning for example) is when it becomes a little less effective. Even if you accidentally miss one pill and take 2 the next day, my pill says that you do not need a backup method. BUT if you miss two, then you have a good risk and need a backup method.
Hope this helps.. I have researched about my own pill SO much. I also read, in case anybody needs to know, that if you throw up after taking your pill, it needed to be taken at least 2 hours ago to be absorbed or you need another pill.

Thanks thanks. and what about the pill protecting for what day after you take it? She has a touch stomach, and tends to throw up more than most people. But she's never thrown up after taking a pill. If she throws up, most of the time its during the morning or the day, and she takes the pill at 10pm. So what exactly can cause someone to become pregnant while taking the pill? Is it not taking it at the same time each day?

And BTW, the pill she is on is Desogen. Anyone have experience with this pill? She took some cough syrup tonight, will that interfere with the pill?

You can get pregant if you are VERY off in the times of taking the pill more than just once or so a month. Like if you are supposed to take it at 10pm and accidentally forget and take them in the morning or sometime the next day and you do this several times a month. Then it lowers the success rate of the pill. Then of course some antibiotics can make the pill not work.. you should always double check about them if you need to take any. I had to get my wisdom teeth pulled and had some medicine that said on the bottle it would make the birth control pill not work, so some will say it on the label as this did. If you got sick and threw up the next day, like you said she does, that is fine b/c the pill will have time to absorb into the body. Sounds like you two are being very careful! I know some people that do not have sex when they take the last week of pills also, where you get your period (right before the period comes). Somebody told me they got pregnant by having sex then, but I don't think that SHOULD happen, I am sure they messed up somewhere else. But just in case if it eases your mind you can always do that too and skip sex then.
