View Full Version : My personal theory...

I have been watching this board for sometime. Around 6 months now, I have come to the conclusion, that most people spend their day trying to cure their reflux. And many seem to know the cause of their reflux, yet find it very hard to cure.

That is a fact.

These are also FACTS...

People on this board suffering from reflux have had one or more of the following problems:

A) Anxiety
B) A very poor diet
C) High stress levels
D) Binge alcohol drinking
E) Illegal drug taking (ecstacy, cocaine) which normal is linked to pattern changes with the mind, and also anxiety connections.
F) Depression

I have not reported anyone, who has SUDDENLY got reflux, without any previous problems, like the ones I mentioned above.

These are the FACTS.

I suffered from anxiety for a long period of this year, and also depression. I am only 19, and have been through alot of stuff that I wouldn't thought would happen to me. I smoked (tobacco), drank alot at weekends (binging), had a poor diet, and on the odd occasion took illegal drugs when partying with friends. This had led to anxiety, and acid reflux.

I don't know how to fix this yet; I have fluttering in the stomach whenever I think about having anxiety, or stuff in the past. Or relations to drink, drugs, or smoking. It all makes my stomach flutter physically!

I created this thread to see how many others have some of the problems I mentioned from A - F that use this thread. It is time to be honest and think deeply into what caused this reflux. Then you can only start to combat it. I have had a healthy diet for around 2-3 weeks, of no smoking, drinking etc. It hasn't made much of a difference, but little is a lot. I eat vegetables, fruit, green tea, manuka honey, ACV, and all other things that said will help. None with any amazing curing abilities.

What do you guys think of the A - F theory? Do you guys think the same? That it is connected from other problems you might have? If so, what do you think your problems are?

I'm fairly knowledgeable about acid reflux and A-E are clearly known instigators of acid reflux. F I've never heard of, I wasn't really depressed until after I had bad acid reflux for years.

My acid reflux came about as a result of singing... anyone else have this problem?

I have had major depression for years. No doubt.

However, everywhere I read says Acid Reflux is caused by a mechanical problem with a valve in the stomach.

I've had some of those a year or so after acid reflux (A, C), but they weren't causes.

i have a-c-f. have had reflux sine i was 10 so i don't believe any of them has contributed to the reflux. i believe it is each individuals anatolmy . also i believe it is hereditary since my mother, father, sister and both of my grandchildre were born with it. they have both spent time in gasto offices and a nght here and there for testing at CHOP>

I believe this, however, I used to smoke, drink and eat like an idiot, have stress out the ears.
I no longer smoke or drink but I am still overweight and stressed.
I do believe all of this adds to it but are not main factors.

I don't know if what I experience is actually acid reflux or just recurrent bad heart burn, but for at least two or three years, I get bad heart burn EVERY DAY. Sucks. Antacids and mint chewing gum help me, so I haven't explored actual medications.

I attribute this frequent heartburn to bad diet -- eating bread REALLY triggers it.

I agree with ICC: among other potential causes, family history has a lot to do with it. My grandmother, mother and my son and I all suffer(ed) with heart burn. I have no doubt anxiety and poor diet can make things worse.

lisap----bread is bland so should actually help absord acid. make sure you are not allergic to wheat or yeast products. i am allergic to yeast and when i stopped eating breads with yeast the problem was much better.

That's a good thought to consider.... I've often wondered how one even finds out about food allergies. I know I get horrible hayfever when the farmers are harvesting the corn (midwestern girl), but wheat or yeast that I eat... I'll have to try to go without a few days...

I'm not sure I have acid reflux in additon to the ulcer that healed but if I do it was caused from long term use of antiinflammatory medications period. So I can't use that for a pain killer anymore. No A-F.

LisaP---- since i had multiple respiratroy allergies and was suffering so much gastro distress my ENT did food allergy testing by way of blood work. OMG you wouldn't believe the food allergies i have. he then explained to me that when you ingest an allergin by way of food most people will suffer gastro distress and not the respiratory symptoms. i do eat bread once in awhile but i buy a yeast free since yeast if one of my biggest allergies. if you stop eating all yeast and sugars for about 2 weeks and feel better you can be pretty sure. remember that sugar helps yeast grow hence avoiding both. after following an allergin free diet i lost weight at a rapid rate also.

I'm guilty of poor diet (junk food addict)
And too much stress (caretaker of relative with terminal illness)

I'm taking better care of myself and feeling a bit better. I hope I can get it under control without meds.

ps.

I had a simple blood test for food allergies too. None were found.

I've heard of singers developing reflux. I think it has something to do with pressure on the diaphragm? Try a Google search.

Sitting at my computer and leaning into the screen puts pressure on my belly. Especially after eating. Now I'm on the pc less and getting a larger monitor.

MAD MAZ----- i 'm not sure what it 's called. having so many respiratory allergies my ENT wanted to check for food allergies and ordered specific bllod work. it took about ten days to come back. I have so many it was a 2 pager. he also told me in his experience people seem to crave some of the foods they are allergic to. i believe this since bread had always been my favorite food (any and all types) an dmy worst allergy is yeast.

Mandy,

Allergies can come on at any time. Ask your physician for blood allergy tests. Or try an allergist for skin testing.

GERD comes from a faulty valve which seperates the stomach from the esophogus. A lot of people have a hiatal hernia with it. As for A-F, glad to see your beginning to see the evils in your life. 19 years old is a bit young for such tragedies. Best of luck

Search the net for symptoms of low stomach acid, its what I have and my doctor is finally treating it very very succesfully (and much cheaper, too!), symptoms include depression and joint pain.

Here is what he told me:

30% of american adulst have LOW acid, not high!!.
Most people don’t have too much stomach acid as you would think from watching TV commercials. By taking antacids, you will have less stomach acid being secreted setting you up for infection and malabsorption.

My doc believes that the acid supplaments (betaine HCL) can aid GERD by
increasing stomach acid (I take 2 pills with every meal). This sounds crazy, since conventional treatment tries to reduce stomach acid. However, he thinks that lack of stomach acid leads to incomplete digestion of proteins; these proteins cause allergic reactions and other responses that lead to an increase in reflux.

It works for me, you should try to investigate it further. IT is a CURE!

Level103,

Please be more judicious in your use of the term "facts". What you have in fact proposed, is a theory.

I am one of those people who developed sudden onset GERD/LPR without having gone through any of the problems that you listed, although I suspect mine was a phsyical reaction to the exhaust coming from my backdrafting furnace.

My best friend also developed sudden onset LPR, and she did not have any of the problems that you listed.

However, I do propose that if you don 't have anxiety to begin with, getting LPR can lead to anxiety as it's a terrible, misunderstood, and not-well treated disease.
