My daugter is going on 8 months and we play with the sippy cup. She prefers the Nuby brand because it has a soft spout like a bottle nipple, so she understands better what it is for. She doesn't know how to lift the cup upwards to drink yet. I was just curious as to when you baby actually understood and began using the cups. I also read, they recommend to wean off or get rid of the bottle around 1 year of age.

My DD started on a nuby sippy with the soft spout at 6 months. Then moved to the hard spout a couple of months later. We just layed her down to drink it like she did her bottle and evently she picked up how to hold it while sitting up. It didn't take long. I know our ped what us to have her off the bottle by 1.She told us that 6 months was a good age to introduce it and then hopefully by one she would be broke of the bottle. It only took 1 time. First time i gave her the sippy she took right to it. So i never gave her bottle back. I figured since it was that easy for her. I wasn't going to risk her getting so attached to the bottle that it would be hard to brake later. All children are different and learn things and want to do things at different time frames. Sounds like she is on her way to learning it though.

DS was given the sippy at 6 months old. We just play with it here and there. He HATED the hard spout sippy, but likes the Nuby alright and we actually got one of the Gerber sippies (with the side handles). It has more of a traditional spout, but it is soft rubber. We give him pedialyte and juice in it. We continue to give him formula in the bottle. I spoke with the doctor today and she suggested correlating the change to whole milk and the sippy at the same time. So the plan is to try to do away with the bottle completely somewhere around his first birthday. I still hold the sippy for him now as he is still getting used to it, boys figure things out a little slower than girls. I suppose I just love to baby him....lol.
