I am 36yrs. old and newly diagnosed with ADD and taking med.

My daughter is 6 1/2 yrs. old and shows all the signs of ADD/ADHD. I have done tons of internet reading and just today my Husband and I along with daughter with me Pediatrcan. It wasn't a long visit. Doc. did want to agree with us, but because of insurance we need to see a specialist for evaluation and diagnosis. Not sure how long all of this will take. Anyone havew any advice to a Mom new to this and struggling to get help for Daughter?
Also, Doc. wants us to go cold turkey and cut out all sugar in my daughter's diet to see if the Hyperactivity is real or sugar related. Anyone else experience anything like this?
Thanks for any and all comments. just a Mom struggling to help my child understand why she behaves as she thinks different.

I have been in your shoes with my daughter. She was diagnosed with ADHD when she was about 4 years old. They wanted me to take her off sugar cold turkey also. I did but it was a real struggle. She fought me constantly. She would hide and get it any way she could. If I didn't give it to her she would get it from school. Sugar was a big factor in all of it. She is now 10 years old and keeping sugar from her is still a battle. But it really does help. What med did the Dr. give her? It took a year for the Dr. to diagnose her with ADHD. At first they said it was kids being kids. I said no way I have another daughter a year older and I never experienced anything like what I am with my middle child. She is a terror on sugar. And when she is without it she is so much better behaved. She is still very hyper, short tempered, distracted, etc. But in the end its better sugar free. It is so very hard with a child with ADHD. I do not give my child meds after several months of awful experiences with meds. I hope everything works out for you.
