I am starting to worry a little about my nine month old. He has for about three months been saying "m's" and now says "mama" and knows that it's me. However, he doesn't say anything else except for the occaisional "gaga". If you ask him if he wants his bottle, he gets all excited, so he knows what that is, but he doesn't say "baba" and has yet to say "dada" either. Is he behind? Is it normal for them to only use one consonant at this age??

that is completely normal. every child is different. i have 2, a 4 year old and a 16 month old. my first son could talk in 2 to 3 word sentences at a year, but my 16 month old has just really started talking, and it is not near a much as my oldest was saying at just a year.
brayden, my 16 month old, was about 7 months old when he said mama, and then about 9 months when he said dada and byebye, and that was about it until he was about 12 months, then he started adding little words here and there, like no no, and nana. but now he is saying more everyday. he is starting to repeat.
but don't worry at all, some children are even older before they say their first word. a friend was telling me the other day that her nephew had not said a word and he was 2 years old, and one day he just walked in the room and said "can i have some coke". so don't worry he will talk when he is ready. before you know it you won't be able to keep him quiet. if i had a penny for every time my 4 year old said "mamma, what..when...why, etc", i would be rich :) remember to enjoy every minute. take care

I have to laugh at this because my son recently learned the word.....NO!

He says it all the time, and now I wish he didn't know how to talk...lol

He is 18 1/2 months old......

They will eventually start talking when they are ready~

ds is almost 9 months - next week. he can say mama dada daddy and baba. i bet there are things your son does that mine does not for example sam can't crawl but he is almost able to pull himself up from sitting to standing position. what i am trying to say is as long as he is making sounds and babling then i am sure your son is doing great:)

Dalton still only babbles....squeals and such. He was a preemie, so he is about 3 months behind, but he is 9 months old as well. He is saying his m's, and when he is mad he will say what sounds like ma or mama. I think it is still a coincidence at this point. I talk to him and try to get him to imitate, he just looks at me like he wants to say it, he just can't quite get it out yet.
