View Full Version : Alcohol and acid reflux...

I've just drank two beers, my reflux symptom of heartburn is gone. Although my breathing seems more harder sometimes. I feel relaxed, most probably due to a relaxed sphincter. It kind of feels like how it used to be before I had 24/7 heartbur, stomach flutters, and anxiety. However, I know if I don't drink 2 pints of water, take some Gaviscon (UK heartburn relief), then in the morning and all next day expect to feel like hell.

I take nexium once a day. It has done nothing for the past 2 and half weeks while I have been on it. Why does alcohol work while your affected by it? But give you such bad reflux next day?! I don't get it!

Does anyone find this with alcohol? During drinking it is fine. Next day it is hell?!

Does this definetely mean you have a case of G.E.R.D?

Hey guys,

Same here, I can be having a day of hell with my reflux, I can have 2 drinks and everything disappears, I feel normal again, but during the night I will be woken up, if I am lucky it will let me sleep thru the night but the next day it really kicks in.

I believe this GERD thing has to do more with anxiety, since alcohol will reduce your anxiety Once the alcohol affects wears off anxiety returns so does the reflux.

Alcohol will irritate your stomach and relax the LES even further, you have to be careful and not over due the alcohol.

I used to have bad, bad heartburn and terrible stools from drinking alcohol and eating poorly. My doctor figured out that it wasn't too much acid, it wasn't enough!! So I take this combination of acid pills and pepsin.

For me alcohol is the only relief from GERD.

I am far from an expert. But I remember reading that Alcohol stimulates the stomach, and makes it form more acid (that's why u get hungry when you've been drinking). This could be a clue that maybe you don't have enough stomach acid. Gerd and low stomach acid have the same symptoms.

I have low acid, I used to treat it with antacids (because of terrible heartburn) and it never worked very well. Until My doc figured out I had low acid, then he gave me Betain-HCL and probiotics. Now I am totally cured (I still take the supplaments, especially with a big meal)
