View Full Version : Lump on left side of neck and enlarged spleen

 Hi, I have had a lump on my neck for over two years now, I was told it was just a gland so I ignored it as it didn't hurt. Over the last few months it has grown and my neck hurts on the left side around the lump area on occasions, most of the time it is painless.

Consequently - I have been very ill in the last year, scans have shown my spleen to be enlarged. I have had viral meningitis, chicken pox six times! constant flu symptoms etc.

I am tired all the time and spend three out of four weeks at a time in bed, as I have no energy and feel so ill. In the last three months I have had continuous blisters in my head and on my body, they come out, heal and then start all over again, I have severe night sweats that drench my clothes and I have to change. My GP has no idea of the cause, and my bloods always come back OK.

I cannot sleep on my left side as the pain in my left side worsens, and my abdomen is swollen on the left side my consultant said that was due to my spleen. I also have swelling in my arms and hands at the moment, it worsens with my chest pain. I itch all over but mainly on my legs, I wake up to find scabs on them as I have made them bleed. I have been sent to hospital so often for chest pain, as it feels as though I can't breath!

I feel as though I am going mad! as no one understands what is going on.

Recently I have started having pain in my left underarm near my breast, I am sure i felt a lump, my husband says he did, and my knees really hurt?... Perhaps its all in my mind!!.

I am really worried I just want to get better and would love to hear from others. :)

Hi,

I feel so bad for you. I believe you should make an appointment with an oncologist to rule out the worst possible. GP's are not really up on Lymphoma. My GP presribed steroids and antibiotics for 5 weeks before he finally decided to send me to a ENT doctor. After I was diagnosed, my GP said to me that he is not familiar with the head and neck. His experience sits with the abdomen. So, you are better off going to a oncologist. Needless to say I have changed GP's

Please keep me updated and think positive !!

Bless
Barbara

Thank you for your reply, I am waiting for a biopsy of the lymph node on my neck and a bone marrow sample.
I will keep you updated on my progress, it's probably just nothing really, but bad luck!!

Kind regards

Susie

Have you had the biopsy of the lymph node yet or are you waiting to have it done?

I have been sent a letter today from the hospital, asking me to go in on the 5th Jan for some x rays of my small intestine, I have to take picolax the day before, can anyone share any light on the reason why they would do this? I'm going for an appointment at the hospital tomorrow so I will ask.

Hi everyone. I hope you all had a good holiday!

I need some advice please if you could? Has any one heard of lingual tonsils?

If so has anyone had enlarged lingual tonsils. and if so what was the cause?

I am waiting to have a biopsy of one of the lingual tonsils and I did not know that everyone has two sets of tonsils unless they have the main ones removed!

Thanks:confused:

:) Hi Guy's

Since I last posted I thought I would give you all an up-date to what's been happening!!

I was referred by my doctor to a new consultant, who actually took the time to listen to me and told me he would go over all my notes, as he remembered seeing me in hospital a couple of times before. He then sent me to have my blood's taken.

I went back to see him, and some of my bloods were high, I'm not sure which ones!, and he referred me to an ENT consultant.

The ENT consultant said that my lymph node in my neck was up, and he put a camera up my nose so he could look into my throat, this showed my Lingual tonsils to be enlarged, apparently this is unusual. After a scan of my neck he has decided to take a biopsy of my lymph node on the neck and one of the tonsils. This will happen this Wednesday. The lymph node has now doubled in size and I have one in my collar-bone.

What is the size of the lump in your neck - when you first noticed it?

Thanks,

Deb

Hi DebM412

When I first noticed that I had a lump on the side of my neck it was only the size of a pin-head! (tiny). Over some time it started to get bigger, and that's when I started to question the lump.

Yesterday I had the node removed and a biopsy taken of my Lingual tonsils, and the ENT consultant said my node was active, and about an inch long. I have other lymph nodes that are up on the same side.

How big do you think your lump is? You seem to be really worried which is understandable!!

Best Wishes Susie x :)

I have a small lump, I would say under 1 cm on my left side of my neck. I located it on accident on March 3, 2006. I saw an ENT in May and he said he maybe could feel something but was very unconcerned. It has not increased in size but I do touch it every day several times a day and this can keep it from decreasing in size. I also have a very small pea sized bump behind my right ear. I noticed this in September. No other symptoms.
Thats my story.

Hi

I too am looking for some answers. My brother in law has has CLL (Chronic Lymphocitic Leukemia) for 8 years now, and along with that he has had low grade Lymphoma. He had this "lump" come up in his "throat". It is actually his tonsil. He went to an ENT today and they are doing a biopsy. They said 3-5 days for results. He also has been going for treatments for his Leukemia as he was coming out of remission. They doctors think that his Lymphoma is no longer low grade and is now high grade (or becoming more aggressive) and he may need more intensive chemo treatments.

That is all I can tell you on his situation right now.

Good luck and keep me posted on your situation as well. If I get results or when I get results I will let you know.

:) Hi Debm412

I think you should go to your doctor, and say that you want the node investigated as it has been there for some considerable time, with out going back to normal.

Please try not to touch it!!, it's sound as if your worried that if you don't touch it it'll go? I suppose I felt like that.

Let me know how you get on, good luck.

Best wishes Susiex

PS, I'm not really with it so I'm sorry if it doesn't make much sense.

:) Hi Dma11663

I am sorry to hear that your brother in law is so ill, if you don't mind me asking, was it his normal tonsils that were infected or the Lingual tonsils?. Not many people mention the tonsils when they are posting on this site, I have tried looking into finding out more information but to no avail.

I wish your family all the best, and will keep you in my prayers.

Best wishes Susie x

I believe it was his normal tonisl but I didn't ask. Apparently he never had this lump before, he has had numerous enlarged nodes over the years and with treatments they alway have gone back down.

I am worried. On Xmas eve he showed it to me, sort of in the middle of his throat. He said it was "annoying" and that he forgot to tell the oncologist about it but would tell her on the 2nd when he started his treatments (rituxin). He has been for 3 treats and all his nodes are going down except that one (it may have gotten a little smaller but it is still large).

They mentioned to him that his lymphoma may be moving to more aggressive/high grade and that they may have to treat him with a more intense "chemo". The treatment he was getting or is getting (The monoclonal antibodies) did not make him ill at all. It did not destroy his quality of life so to speak. Now I am afraid, just so afraid that they won't be able to get him back into remission.

Any ideas about this tonisl? He was told tonsils are lymph nodes or lymph tissue which I never knew!

Thanks and God Bless.

:) Hi dma11663

The tonsils are made up from lymph nodes, i really don't know too much sorry!, the Lingual tonsils are either side of the tongue towards the back of the mouth, my Lingual tonsils were enlarged.

I am so sorry that it appears your brother in law is getting sicker, and I am sure you can't help but feel you wish there was something you could do for him? I wish I had a family member who cared as much as you!!

I am sorry I can't be of more help, it's just that I had my op on Wednesday and it appears to have wiped all my remaining energy, and i can't even think straight.

God bless, your both in my prayers Susie x

:) Hi Everyone

I thought I'd post one note for you all, I have become really tired since my op, I fall asleep all the time. I find that writing a few notes really wears me out!! I'm such a wimp!!

I hope that you are all feeling positive and well?

Don't forget to keep me posted.

Best wishes Susie xx
