I was diagnosed with ADD about 3 months ago, first tried Adderall 60 mg/day, it worked a little with concentration, but just not enough. Then she put me on Ritalin 40 mg/day. I Hate it, it does nothing for my ADD, and it makes me feel terriable, kinda tired, headache, jittery on the inside. I've researched Dexedrine, and I really think it might be the one for me. I asked to switch, and Dr. "doesn't prescribe Dexedrine, she hasn't had good success with it" I don't know what to do.... She treated me like a drug addict, just for asking to switch to it. I've never done anything to make her think that. How do I find a Dr that does prescribe it. I really would like to try it. Any suggestions?? Thank you.

You know, sometimes when I doctor says "I don't prescribe ______" what it really means is they don't know enough about the drug to feel comfortable prescribing it. You may try bringing in the information that you have found that made you want to give it a try for the doctor to read. By giving her some information in a non-threatening way you might change her mind. Good luck!

********************UPDATE************** *****
Well, I went to see my doc today. Last week she told me that the ritalin could take a full month to reach its max effect, and to try that. Well, I can't, the ritalin makes me feel crappy and doesn't help with ADD. So anyways, I took your advice and brought some of the info i've found on Dexedrine with me today. And unlike my last appt. she didn't treat me like I was a druggie or something. She was very understanding, and helpful. After showing her the info and telling her I would just like to TRY it, and if it isn't any different than the Adderall I would go back to that. She prescribed me Dexedrine 10mg/ 4xdaily. What are the usual doses?? Thank you for your help, i'll let you know how it works.

I'm glad that helped! My little reference book that I keep near the computer doesn't have a whole lot of dosing information on Dexedrine. It lists the usual doses for adults as ranging from 5-20mg per day with 40mg per day being a maximum dose. It does not state how to divide that dose up over the course of a day, nor does it list the half life of the drug so that I could try to give advice on when that last dose of the day needs to be taken so that it doesn't interfere with your sleep at night. Did she give you the time released capsules or the immediate release tablets? Either way I'd try a half dose for the first few days as the dose she gave you is the max. Its always easier to work a dose up if more drug is needed than it is to take away drug when a too big dose was taken! Its really late for me tonight, but I'll try to find you a little more information tomorrow when I'm fresher. :)
