My son is 20 days old and he has long nails. Any suggestions on clipping nails for new borns? Any ideas will be appreciated.

When my four kids were newborns and toddlers, I would usually clip their nails after they had a bath. The warm water made the nails soft and easier to clip. They also make baby clippers which are much smaller than the ones adults use. Good luck!

My daughter is 8 weeks old and we did use the baby clippers on her at first, but they weren't that good because the nails were still soft. We now use adult clippers in the small size.

In order to keep her calm during this, we do it when I breastfeed. I breastfeed whild dh clips. She is so interested in eating that she could care less what you do to her. :)

This works best for us and we haven't had a clipping accident yet!

i have tiny baby nail clippers and i did them when ds was asleep as a tiny baby but now he does not really wriggle his hands or feet when i cut his nails because he is fascinated to watch me lol

I try to clip their nails when they are sleeping with
baby nail clippers and then file the sharp edges
with a nail file....

you can also just use a nail file if the nails
are'nt too long......sometimes it is less
scary then the fear of clipping them =)

We always used a baby emery board when our babies were asleep. It worked like a charm.

Although I clipped my sons nails with baby nail clippers when he was a couple of weeks old, I was told recently by a hospital nursery nurse that baby's nails should not be cut with clippers in the first months because they are soft and you run the risk of pulling that nail from the bed. She recommended scissors. Now that makes me a nervous wreck to even think of coming toward a newborn with a small pair of sharp scissors, but she has been doing this for 25 years. I would just be very careful with whichever method you choose and make sure that the baby is calm, sleeping preferrably. An emery board also seems like a viable option.

I never used clippers or scissors to clip my daughters nails. I tried using a nail file, but she was too squirmy for that. So I started bitting them. I would just bite the side to make a little cut then rip it off. This works really great for me. I still do it with my dd who is 14 months old.

I found bitting ours as the best way as I even had trouble holding the baby sized nail clippers. lol :)

No problems with pulled nails or anything else. My 3 year old actually goes to sleep quite often when I do it ??? Weird, but it's great for those times you just want them of to bed. :)
