Hi,

I am new to this board. I have swollen turbintes where I can barely breathe via my nose. My smell and taste sense are almost gone. I also have post nsasl drip problems. I was told I can either have Somnoplasty performed or Turninate bone removal.

Has anyone had Nasal Somnoplasty performed? I heard the somnoplasty is less severe?

I had a surgical turbinate reduction, where they removed a concha bullosa. I don't know enough about the pros and cons of somnoplasty versus the surgery, but I can tell you the recovery from the surgery wasn't bad at all.

^Could you tell me more about your surgery because I'm waiting to have that done. Could you tell me how long the operation takes and how long you were in hospital for etc.

The surgery took almost 4 hours total, but they did other stuff like clean the mucus stuck in my sinuses. They used a laser to cut, not a scapel. I went home the same day. I had to take pain meds for the first couple of days after surgery. I had surgery on a Wednesday and was told I could go back to work the following Monday, but in reality I needed an entire week to fully recover. But it really wasn't bad at all. Getting my wisdom teeth out was 10 times worse. Have soft foods available to eat. Chewing crunchy stuff aggrevated the pain in my nose.

^^Thanks. Did you have splints after the operation and did it hurt when they were taken out?

Four hours is a long time but it should be less for me since you had more done. I think they said they were going to use the laser on me as well and they are also going to make the septum straight again. It is only one turbinate but it's very big. I had an operation to make my septum straight before and I had to stay overnight. I was also put under when I had three wisdom teeth taken out and I wasn't to bad after. I also had one wisdom tooth taken out awake and I still have one left.lol I eat a lot of soft food anyway because of TMJ.

No splints, just some packing to stop the bleeding that they removed a few days later.

Hi sneezy.

If you still check the boards these days, you still needed packing for your nose from laser somnoplasty? This was for enlarged turbinates cause by concha bullosa correct? Or as you said, you also had other work done but no cutting. So that means you still had a lot of bleeding, but from what.
