View Full Version : Questions about burping.

Sam I Am Not

My DS is 5 weeks and I always have a heck of a time burping him. I breast and bottle feed. He never burps in between breasts, and after drinking 3 oz. in a bottle, he often will not burp. Sometimes I will change his diaper and then try again - and I will then get a burp. However, I can't always do this in the middle of the night when I am trying to put him back down. Sometimes I will lay him flat on my lap and bring him back up to burp - but often it just doesn't come.

I get nervous that he is going to spit up in his sleep if he doesn't burp. Actually, tonight was the first time he ever spit up - ever. I couldn't get a burp out of him beforehand though.

ALso, can you burp a sleeping baby? When feeding in the middle of the night, he is often sleepy and I have an even harder time burping him. I will try to burp him for 10-15 minutes - using all different positions, and nothing! I get worried that he will get a tummy ache when I put him back to sleep.

He has no trouble, however, at the other end. He farts a ton - while feeding and everything! Can passing gas take the place of burping?

If your baby is not burping to conventional "patting", in whichever position, try rubbing his back, then patting again.

As far as trying to burp at night, it never bothered my son. In fact, it would put him back to sleep most nights.

Hi! Also, I would add, I don't know if you are breastfeeding or not but I have heard that sometimes breastfed babies don't have as much gas. Anyway, I breastfeed dd and she is now 3 1/2 months old and we still do night feedings and she rarely burps (even though I try). It never seems to bother her though, she never spits up and goes right back to sleep, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Hi there,

Our DD's had the same issue at times where it could take 20 to 30minutes to get a burp out of them:(

Although they both used to pass wind a lot and I say if gas is coming out either end then that must be good.

We could always tell by feeling our DD tummy's and seeing how hard it was and that was a good judging point that she needed to burp or she definately would get wind pain.

I found a combination of rubbing for 5 secs then pat for 5 sec seems to work well, give it a try and see how you go?

Good luck

Josh :)
