 I bite my nails...I hate how it looks, but I just do it. Sometimes there will be weeks that I don't bite them and they get long and really nice looking but something in me just can't stop!!! I'm 19 and would love to have attractive nails. I don't want to go through life worrying about how my nails look, I know chewed nails look very unattractive. My mom bites her nails and I hate how it looks. Also it makes my cuticles all puffy and ragged. Any ideas? I'll try anything!

Hi there,
I am an avid nail and cuticle picker - I've been doing it forever, and so does my mom! I have found that by wearing nailpolish, I either leave my fingers alone, or pick the nail polish off (instead of picking at my cuticles). I put a bottle of clear polish on my nightstand and polish them about every other day to make sure that it's always on.
Also, I always try to have a tube of lotion around (in my purse, on my desk, on my nightstand) because if I catch myself picking, if I put lotion on, it gives me something else to do with my habds, plus it keeps them moisturized so there aren't any hangnails to pick!
Another strategy is to get a nice manicure (the more expensive the better), so you won't want to ruin it! Who want's to pay $20 then bite it all off? I don't!
It also helps to ask someone to help you stop. In the end, it's just a really BAD habit that's hard to stop (it is also an Obsessive Compulsive trait). I asked my boyfriend to stop me when he sees me picking, and although it's irritating, it really works. Be mindful of what you are doing, and make a promise that you will stop. Good luck!

Bite mine too and hate me for it. Wish I knew why I did it. Maybe we're just mad?
When I've really made a mess of them and feel ugly I'll give my stumps a manicure. just smooth out ragged bits with nail file, even if that makes them a little shorter - put some pale pink n varnish on and that makes me feel better about them and makes me leave them alone for a week.
They grow quite quickly in a week.
Also I think there are triggers - i bite mine more when I'm stressed or thinking (I'm a designer so do a lot of that) I think we need to train ourselves to take up different habits to replace the nail biting. Maybe I should chew a pencil instead!
Good luck.
