Prilosec worked well for me for about 8 months, now I'm having problems, increased the dosage and feel worse. Stomach pain with increasing nausea, after eating, and in the early mornings, tight throat, mucous in throat, constantly clearing throat, burning acid in throat, acidy taste in mouth, jaw/face pain, I just feel bad all over. The last 2 days I've had black stools also. NOt sure what is going on here, called GI and said to increase dosage, and wants to see me after 1st of yr, any idea's out there, of what's going on here ?

You sound a lot like me. I took PPIs for several months and started feeling worse-stomach cramps, nausea, agitation, pain in face and burning. Now I take ranitidine, Gaviscon after meals and Pepto Bismol for nausea and indigestion.
I just added acidophilus and might try digestive enzymes.. I still have the mucous, the bad taste and throat clearing but it's better than all the extra stomach stuff. My throat symptoms are worse at night even though I sleep practically sitting up. I always feel worse after eating unless I take the Gaviscon. I don't think everyone can take PPIs.
Good luck finding the right combination to take to help you.

I agree with you Casey, not everyone can take PPI"S. They seem to aggravate my IBS, and also Gerd. I have Barretts and my Doc says I need to stay on them indefinately. But if I cannot tolerate them, what am I to do. I know my body more than anyone. You mentioned agitation, I thought it was just me, I have that as well. After 1st of yr, I may have to talk to him about other alternatives.

If you have Barretts you probably need to stay on PPIs. A different one may be easier to tolerate. You can still take Gaviscon and other things to help with your symptoms. Maybe your doctor will give you samples to try another PPI. Have you tried eating yogurt to help your stomach? I hope you will find something that will help. January is a long time away when you are feeling bad.

I experienced the same thing-developed HORRIBLE stomach problems a few months after starting PPIs. But I found the solution and the stomach problems have been gone over a year and I'm still on PPIs for reflux. Go to the health food store and get a good digestive enzyme. Take it as you start each meal. It's amazing. Good luck, Skylar

Yes I've tried yogurt, the activia. But I have not tired the digestive enzymes, I may try that.
