 I am 33 yrs old and have 2 children. Family History of Breast Cancer and ovarian Fibrocystic Disease showing atypical cells. All sisters and mother had hysterectomies before age of 40, except me.
Went to see Dr. in early July, 2006 regarding a lump in the left breast. July 18th, 2006-Mammogram was taken of both breasts. July 26th, 2006-Mammogram results confirm a lump in the left breast. Inconclusive findings. Spot compression and ultrsound. August 9th, 2006- Noticed nipple on left Breast to be very itchy. Tried to relieve it with creams and cold cloth. No relief. Discharge from left nipple is blackish in appearance and sticky. Very hot by times as well as a very "full feeling". at times seems somewhat swollen but not much. August 11th, 2006- App. with Dr.regarding itch Ultrasound confirmed a bi-lobe cyst deep by chest wall at the 2 o'clock position. One part approx. 1.4 cm in diameter and the other part .8 cm in diameter. Thoughts of radioligist- "appears benign" App. with surgeon for biopsy/removal. Prescribed hydrocortisone cream for the itch. If no relief in a few days, to come back. August 14th, 2006- No relief from cream and nipple has a terrible burning sensation. Dr. prescribes antibiotic- (in case of infection). On August 24th, went to Surgeon who drained cyst but did not send fluid for testing. Told me that if it comes back to come back and see him. His thoughts on the itching was that it might be exzema and will go away on it's own.
It is now December 15th and I've noticed that the cyst that was drained in my left breast is back to about the same size it was in July and the itching is still there as well as the blister-like spots and discharge. 3 wks ago I noticed a lymphnode just over my right breast was swollen. The swelling has not gone down. Also, my last two periods have not been regular. Novemeber 1st period lasted for almost 2 wks and was just spotting (an hour here, an hour there). December 7th monthly was so heavy, I filled a pad every 2 hours, for about the first three days and it lasted a total of 6 days. My periods are ussually only 5 days with the first day being the only heavy one. I went to see my GP and he confirmed with an exam that the cysts are back in the left breast and that he thinks it is a cyst in the lymph node over the right breast.
I have an appointmanet to go back to the surgeon. What are some of the questions I should ask when I see him? Should I insist on seeing a breast specialist?
