I think I had both test done at the same time.

When I received the result there were bands (indicative of western blot test?) even though this is my first test.

The conclusion of the test is that I am negative however I had one band that is positive (+1). I think my elisa test is negative (there was a big bold negative on top of the page (can't remember what for), but my western blot test had one positive band and I think it was p24, and there was a comment on the bottom saying the patient is negative bla bla bla and may opt for another test to be conclusive.

The doctor recommend me to do a PCR test which I did and I am anxiously waiting the result on this one. She assured me that I am likely to be negative but I am still very scared. How common is it to have one positive band and yet still be negative???

thanks for the reply. Sounds like your western blot test didn't detect any positive bands.

Would a normal flu influence the western blot test? as I just recovered from a flu prior to having the test done. Could it influence the p24 band?

argh i can only speculate at this point but im nervous as hell.

First, if your elisa was negative they should not have done a western blot. They should have stopped at the elisa and told you your result was negative. If the elisa was positive and you had one band show on the western blot chances are good that it is a false positive from cross reacting antibodies. From what I have found after doing some research is that the p24 is the most common one that shows up due to cross reacting antibodies. It is best to follow up with another test though.

thanks, i will get my second test result tomorrow.. im so nervous.

The thing is. from my research i found that p24 is the first band to be detected (if im not mistaken) and i have had an unprotective sex 2 weeks prior the test. so it could be that they didn't detect antibodies yet but they detected the p24 band, oh.. whatever i'm just speculating. :(

i'll let you know the news tomorrow.

Thank you Motherlove. I just received the test result for ELISA, WBT and PCR...

not so good news.. not bad news either..

ELISA = negative

PCR = negative

Western Blot = 2 bands are now showing. p24 +1, and p18 +1 which makes this test indetermined.

I will have to take the test again in 6 weeks. My doctor told me not to worry because my PCR was negative and it is the most sensitive test and detect early infection than other tests... I just don't know what to do anymore... so this p18 band just showed up within a week??? its so strange.

Mush one person on anther hiv site was taking the elisa and western block over and over again and it kept coming up pos and indetmine. Then the docter gave them a pcr test finally after going back and forward with w/b and e/and it was neg, and the person said the doctor said it just happens to some people when they take wentern block and elisa test. The gay and lesbion center in hollywood where i take my test they said the pcr test is accurate and very sensitive.They do the swab orasure come back in 20min,the antibody test they take blood for this and the pcr naat. The test must be accurcate, the this places is funded by the Los Angeles health department. The heath department fund this test, because they say the area is high risk for hiv infections and they won't to cacth early infections.You can find alot of places on the net that talks about pcr testing even the cdc mentions it on their **** up confusing web site any way hope this help, and the places where i go get tested at you only have to wait three weeks for the test.:angel: :angel: :angel:
