My mother takes 5mg prednisone 3 times a day. She is being weaned off right now. She's been taking it to reduce inflammation and to decrease CPK numbers. Her CPK was once 1800 now its well below 400. My concern is with its side effects. She told her doctor about the things she has been experiencing and the doc apparently doesnt think its a problem. So far since she's been taking the medicine she has had the following changes: increased appetite, weight gain, facial swelling (more like fat accumulation on the cheeks), blurred vision and [i've noticed] mild depression.
So my question is, will these symptoms subside or better yet disappear? After she's off the prednisone the doctor wants to put her on another serious immunosuppresant - imuran, and something called boniva. Lots of meds, is this doctor trying to kill her or help her  .

Hi, Unfortunately cortosteroids can have some pretty nasty side effects, but their usefullness sometimes warrants their use. I'm sure the doctor is trying to help, even though I'm sure your mom may not think so by how she feels right now.
I'm on a different steroid since the 4th and have never felt so horrible, phyically and mentally, but will put up with it to reduce the swelling in my brain from a tumor. (Thankfully that will be out of Wednesday and hopefully the steroid soon after!)
Just discuss the side-effects with your doctor and if any new side-effect pops up (on any drug) discuss it with the doctor and above all else, keep good records for future use. So they can avoid meds that bother her in the future, if possible.
Usually side effects will abate once the drug leaves the body, so once she's off it she should start feeling better.
And hope you mom feels better soon.

I really hope you feel better. I asked my mom how she felt and she said she felt fine physically despite the side effects, thats strange. She's going to get endoscopy friday because her doctor is going to put her on another medication that can exacerbate her acid reflux. jeez.
