I have heard of year around allergies, but then I also hear that the first freeze kills all the allergens, so people with allergies should not have any problems in the winter, yet if there has been a freeze, then temps rise in the high 40's and rains, doesn't that bring up any allergens to those who suffer with allergies? I have heard that many people get headaches when the weather changes or it rains. Isn't that some sort of an allergy issue? Just wanted to clarify and get some info on that.:dizzy:

I keep an eye on our local pollen and mold counts. In the US the mold counts are at the highest in July and the lowest in the winter. If it warms a little during the winter I do notice that the mold counts go up a little but no where near the level I see during the summer. Those who suffer from dust mites have more problems during the winter. Of course those who suffer from animal allergies do not see a seasonal change. You are correct about the hard frost killing all of the pollens. A short warmup is not enough time for the plants and trees to go through all of the stages that they need to go through to make pollen (I think that plants and trees respond to how many hours of daylight that there is also). I have heard of people getting sick with weather changes, especially where I live and it can be 20 degrees one day and 60 the next. Could it be the barometric pressure changes? Some molds become active when it rains.

do you think when it rains after a frost has killed off everything, that enough mold can arise to cause allergy symptoms what do you think about people that seem to have allergy symptoms after a freeze? Do you think it is allergy related symptoms or possibly something else? I also wonder if barometric changes can effect the ears? I would love to hear from those who do suffer from allergies year around to see you feel in the winter, especially when it's a mild winter. Thanks everyone!:wave:

I have some of both...pollens - which are better during the winter - and cats, dogs, dust mites,etc - which are not better in the winter. In fact, having the heat on makes them worse for me. I just got off the injections a year ago and am doing well. However, I know it won't last forever. And mold can be anytime - heat and water cause mold so that can be year round.
And some people are more sensitive to changes in barometric pressure - it's often a cause of migraines.

I am allergic to practically everything except food so I have allergies all year round. Since I've been on allergy meds I've been fine. The only time I have a problem with my allergies is when its too humid. I just pop on the dehumidifier then. Before being on allergy meds I felt pretty much the same all year round. Same symptoms during the summer and the winter.

Singer, the colder weather reduces the mold count but it doesn't make it disappear. For example, here in Northern Kentucky the mold count in July goes up to almost 20,000 parts per cubic meter. In the winter it hangs around 3,000. When it warms up a bit in the winter it can go up to 5,000. The other day when it was 20 degrees during the day the count went below 1,000. The mold doesn't have to go through all of the cycles that plants and trees need to go through to make pollen. It seems that the mold just wakes up and starts growing if the temperature is high enough. I guess it depends upon how sensitive you are to the mold whether or not you have symptoms or not. My husband only has a mold allergy and the winter is when he is symptom free. I would think that if your allergy symptoms get worse in the winter that it is dust mites. I know people who get worse in the winter (they have all of the allergies and their worse allergy is dust mites).

So I guess people just have to suffer through it. I hate taking meds and if I can avoid it, I will. Have a great Christmas everyone!!!!!

Hello, I live in Central Texas and brother I can tell you for a fact that weather changes here do definely effect people with allergies. I can tell you ever time a front is comeing in, when it gets within a day from me my allergies go wild and get bad bad. I was told that the reason for that is, is because the front is pushing all the pollen in front of it from other places it has been and it works like that. After it leaves I will be bad for four five days and hope to God another one isnt right behind it. So needless to say here in texas this time of year is bad for me and allergies suffers .

Judging by what your saying Sannah, it sounds like it must be the dust mites(which I know I'm allergic to)giving me symptoms and not the black mold on my ceiling. Because my symptoms are worse in winter.

Rawspice, is the black mold on the ceiling year-round? Can you fix the leak in the roof or pipes that is causing the mold? You can use bleach on the ceiling periodically to kill the mold. Many people complain that the dust mites are worse in the winter. Are you washing you blankets periodically and using dust mite covers on your pillow and mattress?

Yeah it's there all year round, but i don't know for sure it's mold, just that it sounds like it from what you lot on here say. But you know when it's really cold and things go black because of condensation, it's like that, so I don't know if it's mold. The leaky roof was fixed years ago. We did use something to wash it off but I can't remember what, but thanks I will try bleach now! All that is left is some big black round stains that we couldn't wash off, and they do feel a bit cold/damp to touch. But I do get some new black stuff/mold growing if it's really cold and the heating isn't on. I will have to look into it if the bleach doesn't help.

I had a blood test years ago that said i was really allergic to dust mites. I have dust mite covers on my pillows but not my matress. No, I'm not washing the blankets as much as I should do but I do sometimes. I hoover a lot though, don't know if that helps.
