View Full Version : Contact lenses for high myopia

I'm completely confused. A few months ago I went for a check-up at the opticians and was found to have "retinal tears". This has since been cleared up at the hospital that I have lattice degeneration, was informed of the risks but haven't developed any holes yet. Anyway, the optician told me that due to my high prescription, it's unlikely I'd be able to wear contacts. I'm actually unsure what my prescription is due to being told different things and all my hospital visits, but it's either -12 or -14 and -15. I don't understand this as many websites seem to say contacts can be especially made up to -30 dioptres. And also when I went to see an eye specialist at the hospital, I told him what the optician said and he said it's not true, that prescription contacts can be especially made, but that due to my high prescription he could see my opticians point? Surely that's a contradiction?

My optician also told me I'd have to wear rigid contacts and that I'd have to wear for so many days a week to get a benefit from them. What did he mean by this?

And where can I find contact lense providers that do lenses to my prescription (obviously I will need to get the exact details clarified).

I'm not sure which contact lense providers offers custom-made lenses but alot of providers made lenses up to -12 diopters, some offer more.

I don't know much about contacts, but I think having to wear them for several days to get the benefit would be because a rigid lens will shape your eye to some degree. A seriously myopic eyeball is elongated.

Thanks for your replies. That wouldn't be a problem for me. Perhaps he just didn't realise the unease I feel anyway with my glasses, and as a result how willing I'd be to stick to the plan.
