hey i am new here..... for the longest time i have always had white marks on all my nails... they grow with the nail... i asked someone at my work that is in the medical field ( vol paramedic) what they r and how can i get rid of them and he just told me that they r from hitting my nails on things and i told him no they r not then i showed him how they acually grow with the nail and he told me what they r called but he says he has no idea what they r from and how to get rid of them... honestly they dont bother me all that much but i would not mind at all if someone told me a way to get rid of them or how to make them lighter... am i lacking something at first i thought it was because i have low iron but i looked up the symtoms nothin about white sopots on nails all i could find is something about a zinc deficiency then i also heard it was a vit D deficiency and then a calcium deficiency what is it!!!

Leuconychia is what they are called. They are caused by voids in the nail plate cell production and begin in the root of hte nail (matrix) Whenever there are missing cells or voids between the cells, the area looks white. Some people have them all the time, some people have them sometimes and some psople never get them. My son gets them, but I have never had them, so they are not necessarily genetic. Just eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water. The healther the inner self, the healthier the outer self.

They are not a vitamin deficiency that I have ever heard of as 'scientifically proved'.

The nail plate is comprised of hard Keratin Protein, so a diet rich in protein would be beneficial to your nails AND the rest of you :))
