View Full Version : Third Mammogram Since Oct.

Tomorrow I go for my third mammogram since Oct. 27. They found a solid lump and sent me back for another mammogram and ultrasound of my left breast. Then I had a biopsy, but they found no cancer cells, which I know is good news, but I have to have a repeat mammogram tomorrow and follow up with the surgeon on Friday. Has anybody ever been through this, and how did it turn out for you? If the lump has grown, should I have it removed? I might add that the lump can't be felt on physical examination.

It sounds like your doctors are being thorough by following up with more tests. Even though your test results were good, a good doctor makes sure there's nothing else going on.

Make sure to ask plenty of questions. The lump is in your body, you should know as much as possible.

If the surgeon recommends no surgery, ask: Why do you feel it's ok to leave the lump? What is the type of lump I have? Will it grow? Can it become malignant? Does having this lump indicate that I will develop other breast problems?

Once you know the name of the lump, find as much information as you can.

If the surgeon suggests that the lump be removed, ask him why this is the best option. If at any time you question the recommendations of the surgeon, you are free to get a second opinion.

It is your right to request or refuse surgery. But don't underestimate the knowledge of medical professionals. They deal with these matters every day and will most likely act in your best interest.

In my case, to make a long story short, I was scheduled for a biopsy. My surgeon recommended that he not perform the biopsy, but instead remove the lump. That proved to be a vitally important and excellent call.

Let me know how things go.

Best wishes:)

Nikki

Thank you, that sounds like good advice. I will let you know Friday after I see the surgeon again.

i have had breast issues - the best test to get is an MRI - i personally would have that test done. it can look at mass in another way - paula zahn (cnn anchor) her mom had breast cancer so paula get ultrasound and breast mri every year to make sure she is okay. perhaps you have them do a biopsy of the mass as well just to make sure.

Thank you for your reply, if the lump is still there, I will ask the doctor about getting an MRI, that would be useful I think in checking on the spots on the lymph nodes in my chest that was found last summer.

Good news, the lump was gone, all they saw was some fibroglandular elements. The doctor said that was normal, so I don't have to have another mammogram for a year.
