Hi, Just found out i'm 6wks pregnant, while i'm really shocked excited and scared all at the same time, the fact I have herpes (found out september 06) makes me think I may lose the baby or pass it on etc. Because I've only just contracted H, is this possible ?
I've also read on the net about possible blindness, brain damage:eek: stopped reading anymore, got quite upset. Could any1 please tell me their experiences, also should I tell my doctor, or leave it and just tell the hospital ? Thanks in advance ! !

Hello,
congrats on your pregnancy. I have had herpes for 3 yrs now, and I delieverd a healty baby girl in April 2005. There is no risk to the baby unless you deliever vaginally and have open sores which wont happen because the doctor will check for sores before you deliver and if you have them then you will just get a c-section. Also, herpes cannot get up to the baby since it is completely sealed off by the bag of water. There is no reason that you can't attempt a vaginal birth. I started taking Valtrex at 36 weeks until I gave birth, and I was outbreak free at the time of delivery. Good luck to you.:)

Hi, i am also pregnant, about 5 weeks... I already figured on taking Valtrex the final 6 weeks of pregnancy.. and i know that if there are any sores present the doc will perform a C-section...but what about shedding??? What if the doc sees NO sores...but there is shedding???

You MUST tell your OB first of all because she will probably want to put you on an antiviral med., such as Valtrex, around your last trimester. There is a low chance of you passing it on to your child during childbirth(thru sores or shedding) if you are on this medication. However, there are some women who don't want to take any chance at all, and you can find a few Dr.'s out there who will do a c-section for women with HSV. Most will probably just want to put you on the medication that significantly reduces outbreaks and make sure your are HSV free before delivering, and deliver vaginally if possible.

I was really worried to, but gotta chill, cus all this stressing affects the baby. We've been able to concieve so should be ok long term. Just wait till u have yr scan n see your baby, its amazing and all your worries go. I'm 13+5 and my babys big n healthy, so the nurse said, so i'm very happy and relieved
