View Full Version : Weird Headaches/muscle spasms

Hey all,
About a week ago i started getting pretty bad pressure headaches on the left side of my forehead. FOr awhile now i had been getting slight twinges of pain in various areas around my scalp, and also this creepy-crawly sensation similar to the "chills" that usually affects one side of my scalp at a time. Last weekend I began getting resting tremors in my arms and legs with muscle spasms. It feels like I am unable to fully relax. Starting last week I started feeling sort of light-headed, with a slight dizziness (I'm not falling over or bumping into things, but I don't feel entirely steady either). I went to the doctor yesterday, and he did some tests, my strength on both sides of my body was fine, vision fine, etc. Did notice a slight tremor in my right hand and in my neck. These tremors especially are extremely annoying, especially when I am trying to sleep at night. I'm just wondering if anyone has had symptoms similar to these? I'm 19 years old and in good physical condition.

Well this could be many things, has he ordered any scans for you? Such as an MRI, Cat Scan, or any xrays? You may ultimatly want to see a neurologist. This is something that could potentially range from being Stress, being sick, to some sort of neurological disorder such as a tic, or seizures or a condition such as having a tumor or any other number of things. While I wouldn't want you to start taking on a mindset of worry since things appear to be vauge at the momment, you may want to push to have some of the above mentioned tests done on your head and neck and perhaps some blood labs in order to start trying to find a diagnosis if they haven't done any yet.

Have you had any recent injuries? Such as a fall, an accident? Does any of your family have any neuological conditions that could have been potentially inherritied?

Many blessings to you and Good luck, I hope they find the reason behind it soon and that its nothing serious.

Update: Went to emergency room on 1/6, got a CT Scan, came out normal. Doc prescribed some antibiotics for possible middle ear infection. Going in to neurologist on Wednesday, will hopefully schedule an MRI soon. I'm really worried. Pressure has let up a little since saturday, and i'm a lot less dizzy, but I have also started hearing (or think i hear) strange clicking/popping sounds like rice krispies in my head. I looked this up online and saw that one cause of this is a leak in CSF...I had a bad lower back injury about a year and a half ago (severe sprain), could this be the cause?

Summary of my symptoms:
-ear popping (has since reduced)
-constant pressure over left side of forehead and top of head, starts about an hour after I wake up, then varying degrees throughout the day. Seems to be better when I have my head lower than my body, or when i'm excercising. Does not throb. Sometimes i get icepick pains though.
-occasional feeling of "chills" on scalp, back.
-muscle twitches throughout body, mainly legs, arms, torso, eyebrow

Please...if anybody has any suggestions/has experienced this before, please help...i'm nervous.

If you have the name of your neurologist, I you could have him/her paged or call the office and tell them all the symptoms you are having. If you don't hear back from them in an hour or two after having called the office, CALL AGAIN. If its a page, give it maybe 45 mins and then call the answering/pageing service again if no return call yet. If the neuro feels its serious, he/she may have you come in sooner for an office visit or have you admitted, but hopefully its not that serious. If its sinus problems you can always get to an ENT (ear nose throat) doc to see what his or her take on it is. Some sinus infections are viral in which case an antibiotic may do nothing for it. You can get Sudafed and Guaifenesin tablets over the counter at a local pharmacy, if you can't locate them just ask them to find it for you. These can help with sinus problems as well. You may ultimatly need a nasal steroid to help with inflamation. Sinus infections can be a very serious issue in acute stages and can do nasty things like spread infection to the brain, but this seems to be more rare. But being that your cat scan was clean, I have to wonder why he's treating you for sinus, unless the radiologist wasn't looking for that at all- so it could have been missed, because from some reading I've done a cat scan should show sinus infections.

hey, i know that all of your symptoms are really scary and weird. But it sounds to me like you really have some sort of allergies or sinus infection, cause i've been through the same stuff and symptoms as you, maybe not ALL your symptoms are sinus related but sounds to me like more of a stress, sinus, anxiety mix to me, but i am no doctor and i would follow up with what your doctor has to say but i wouldnt worry too much if your cat scan was fine and definately if your MRI turns out fine, so try not to stress too much it will only make your symptoms 50 times worse....Trust me on that!

I would also recommend a Cat Scan on your sinuses, to make sure they are dectecting if you have an infection, or you may be developing allergies, but i've had the same pressure on one side feeling its horrible and the chills on one side of my face

Thanks for your responses! Some of my symptoms seem to have been getting a little better, esp after I started taking antibiotics, and I have been really stressed out since I started college. But I will update again after I see my neurologist tomorrow.

OK, so I went to see my neurologist today. At first when I told him my symptoms he was concerned, but then he did a neurological exam and I passed with flying colors. So i'm back to square one. My doctor suggested it may have been due to my TMJ condition or to anxiety, although I have been trying to relax doing nothing for the past few weeks. I am still at a loss as to what's wrong with me!!

Are you still having the other symptoms?

Yes, I am for the most part. I scheduled an appointment with another neurologist for Feb 22nd, but that is so far away. I'm thinking about going to my Primary and asking him to give me a referral for an MRI of my head and neck, just so I don't have to wait for the neuro. Ugh I just want to feel better.

Spasms have decreased in intensity, head pressure is still there, I have been getting some nasal drip but it hasn't been anything big. Sometimes I get icepick pains in this one spot on the back top of my head. THe pressure seems to oscillate between pushing behind my ear/side of head some days, forehead other days, and top of head other days.

I am curious what you find out...I have some of these symptoms going on too. The nuero is checking for vertebral arterial dissection with MRI/MRA next week. I think it is my neck/cervical spine though.

MRI w/contrast came back clear :D I was reading on the lyme disease board, and I seem to have almost all the symptoms those people are listing, so I might ask to be tested for lyme. I am just so happy I don't have a brain tumor, I was sure that's what it was :D :D
