My autistic 9 year old has some real sensory issues with socks. They can't have any threads or strings inside, they can't be too thick or too thin, they can't have any lumps in the seams, they can't bunch up and they can't slide down. I'm constantly on the lookout for good socks for him. I was wondering if any of you have a similar issue in your family and have found something that is working well at your house? I'm just about at my wits end...
Thanks! :)
Thanks! :)

Have you tried turning the socks inside out?
I know walmart and Carters sell socks with no seams. Try to google seamless socks. Find a brand and look for a retail store near you.

When desperate, we do turn socks inside out. Sometimes he'll go along with that, sometimes he won't. We are currently using a sock from Wal-Mart, but the one we found there that works is a low-rise sock and now that winter is here he needs something warmer. I did try the google search and found several possibilities! I'm going to give one or two a try and I'll keep you guys posted on what works :)

I have Asperger's, and I'm the same way. 90% of the time, I just don't wear socks. There's really no need for them. I, too, have a problem with socks sliding down. That bothers me greatly. I only have two pairs of socks that I jump at the chance of wearing. They're my "lucky socks," and I wear them as an OCD-related superstition. One thing to consider is that it isn't just the sock itself that is bothering him- it may also be the pressure he feels when he's wearing socks with shoes. I don't like wearing socks in general, but with most shoes, there's this tremendous pressure that builds up with the extra layer that makes me want to lash out. The only shoes I can wear socks with and not mind are my special tennis shoes. (They're flat on the floor because I also have sensory issues with that thing that sticks up in the sole of tennis shoes when you put your heel on it.) They are nice and free. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

You may be right GatsbyLuvr in that any sock might bother him. He spends his whole summer sockless in sandals and he would do that year round if allowed. But we live in Minnesota, so we have to make him put something more on his feet in the winter.
Personally, I enjoy going sockless and wearing clogs to work most of the summer. I don't like how the practice contributes to foot odor at times (I get paranoid about that kind of stuff). This summer I found those new Croc's clogs and I really like them! They are lightweight, supportive, inexpensive, available in lots of fun colors, and best of all I can toss them in the washing machine as often as I like! They are never, ever stinky that I can tell at least. They are the next best thing to being barefoot in my opinion.

i have major sock pickiness issues myself
i Think, by lable, they are "athletic" socks, which are not thick like normal socks, bu im not positive
i like them to be cute patterns/colours, or plain black, too
i cant wear ankle socks
i cant wear stiff socks, must be cotton
if tehre are trheads inside i cut them out aten stitch itup myself
i liek knee high socks whch i pull up, andonly wear with skirts or short poants, or regular which i fold down and wear with pants.
cant be too baggy or too tight, Must be my size
i found a few pairs at Walmart the other day, but i buy girls socks, and your looking for boy socks;
it says on teh lable " white -dearpicture- stag " "a leap above" "dressy ribbed cuffs" "made in turkey"
maybe they make boys socks too?they are Very comfy, and they were liek a quarter a pair anyway
my sock pickiness probably drove my parenst crazy befre i started shopping for myself
one good trick is, if you find a type you can wear, get a bunch of them, becuase socks always slowly vanish over time then you have to find more

lucas (newly diagnosed pdd) hates socks and shoes (all types) as soon as he is upset the socks and shoes are the first to go. clothes are also an issue, but that is another story. please let me know if you find socks that work, lucas doesnt seem to like any of them, not even the ones with spiderman, his "idol". are there any shoes they seem to like?

My son is 2 and starting to show mild symptoms of the sock / shoe issue. I feel your pain. It gets old and you just want to go crazy sometimes. I found that my son likes the thiner athletic socks. Who knows if this will get more extreme down the road. When he is upset the right shoe comes off. I have him wear New Balance shoes. I just found out the other day that those are the only shoes he will wear now. They are a size bigger then his foot and are bendable for walking.
I know how it makes me feel "Put your socks and shoes on and LETS GO!!" Its really hard for me to understand how they feel. =(

Just a little update on the sock issue. We have 2 different brands that are working out pretty well. The first are from Wal-Mart and are made by Faded Glory, the package describes them as having a "comfort toe" and we got them in the boys department. The others that are working are from Stride Right and are called "Seamless Crew Sock" and come in a 3 pack. The stride right socks I found by searching "seamless socks" as someone suggested. I hope this helps some of the rest of you!

It's wonderful that you found some socks that your son will wear. Winter is hard to get through without socks. :) Another suggestion for those of you still looking is diabetic socks. I know a youngster with Autism who likes these socks and can't wear anything else.I'm not sure how much they cost.
