I having been wondering about this for a long time now. Well, as everyone knows, the sex of the baby is determined by the male. If the sperm carries a "Y" chromosome, the zygote will be a male, and if the sperm carries an "X" chromosome, the zygote will be a female. I am wondering if there is anyway to manipulate the outcome of the baby in a lab or something? For example, if a couple wanted to have a girl, can the doctors do anything that will make the sperm carry the "X" chromosome or somehow isolate the "X" chromosome, so that the zygote will be a female?

I read somewhere that they can do that now if you want to. But it is really expensive.

Some fertility doctors (reproductive endocrinologists) will isolate the sperm carrying the chromosome of your choice and will perform a fertility procedure (IUI or IVF) to influence the gender. I could go off on a tyraid about how thoughtless and disgusting I think it is that someone would even consider this procedure, but I will refrain.

I read this earlier and thought the same thing. I'm glad you said it for me!

It isn't unusual if a couple already has a few of the same sex that they would want a baby of the opposite. To go as far as manipulating it in the lab is a taking it a little far but to each her own - yes, it can be done but statistically it is more successful with isolating the male sperm.
You could try achieving the sex of the baby you want by natural methods - they say if you want a girl to do lots of bd up to 2 days before ovulation and then stop as female sperm are stronger and last longer. If you want a boy do lots of bd up to and including the day of and day after ovulation as male sperm are faster.
Really, the baby's sex is a matter of chance as long as the baby is healthy that is all that really matters. But I don't fault anyone who really wants a certain sex as long as they aren't upset when they don't get what they want and are not biased against one sex.

I agree with someone's earlier post. You could try it in a lab, but it costs thousands of dollars. The easiest way is to try the natural method. Like the other person said, for a girl, have sex everyday but STOP 2-3 days before ovulation. The female sperm will live longer and by the time you ovulate, most of the male sperm will be dead. Also for a girl, don't have the man ejaculate to deeply in you. Most of the male sperm won't make it up there, as the female's are heartier. Try not to orgasm, as the fluid released upon female orgasm favors the male sperm. For this method, try to use Basal Temperature monitering. There is a TON of info on it on the web.
For a boy, DO NOT have sex until the day you ovulate. Female sperm can live in you for up to five days, and you dont want any hanging around when the egg drops. Use an ovulation kit to tell you when you have ovulated, and then have lots of sex. Try to ejaculate deeply into you. The male sperm swims faster and should reach the egg first. Try to orgasm, as the fluid released favor's the male sperm.
It is also said that a more acidic person favors a girl, and a more alkaline a boy.
But overall, pray for a healthy baby!

do yall people know what yall are actually talking about? female sperm??? only males have sperm. the male gamete is sperm and the female gamete is an egg. For fertilization to occur the egg and sperm have to unite in the oviduct. Having sex up to two days before ovulation and then stopping won't do anything because the sex determination is based on the chromosomes in the males sperm, not in the females egg. The females gametes have nothing to do with producing a female baby. The female gives an "X" 100% of the time. The male can give an "X" or a "Y". If the male gives an "X" the baby will be a girl (XX), and if the male gives a "Y", the baby will be a boy (XY). I haven't taken much biology, but I know this much atleast. I explained all this in the original post. All I was wondering is if there was a way to manipulate which chromosome the sperm will carry? I do not think this is disgusting at all. If a couple want to ensure the sex of the baby then this would be great.

What they mean by "male sperm" and "female sperm" is the sperm that contains the X or Y to either create a girl or boy.
You can have the gender selection procedure done at a Reproductive Endocronologist. Like the other posts stated, it is extremely expensive and they do not 100% guarentee the outcome. You usually do this with either inseminations or in-vitro fertilization. Obviously, insurance does not cover the expense (even if you have infertility coverage).

BD means "baby dance" (have sex.)
I agree with the others. The thought of doing this just so they can get a gender they want really makes me mad. But I also realize most people are blessed with easy conceptions and pregnancies. So of course they would not understand how the only thing some people pray for is a healthy child. Period. I once had that blessed innocence also. But I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinions and decisions. I have heard of some conditions where a woman will miscarry every boy pg for example. Perhaps this would help those people. I would still be uncomfortable with it though. But I've never seen this offered at my RE. I wish you the best in whatever you do.
