our daughter, who will be 16 in a couple of weeks, for the past several days has been complaining of back pain on the right side. It's that time of the month, so when she originally told me about it, I chalked it up to cramping.
Tonight, we noticed on the right side, just above her hip bone, and below her ribs, you can feel a definite "bump" or something there, she says it hurts and it is quite large.
She is a very active girl, playing sports all year and is currently playing basketball. There is no known "injury".
Can this be muscular? Could be be her kidneys (I've pretty much ruled this out, as she isn't having any other symptoms).
I didn't think if it is muscular, that it would be as large as it feeels. It just doesn't feel right.
She's feeling fine, and we'll call the doctor on Tuesday, it only hurts when she moves just right or touches it....but I have to admit, I'm a bit worried....I've never felt anything like it, or seen anything like that.
She has had back x-rays done, last year, so if there was something there then, I'm sure it would have shown.
Thanks to anyone who has any ideas....this is going to drive me crazy waiting unit Tuesday.....

Sorry to hear that she's having issues. It really could be anything and between now and Tuesday.. I would be watching her very closely. It could be a muscle spasm, and it could still be her kidney. I have had several stones and until they passed, I had no clue that was the issue. I too thought is was just female mother nature.. and it turned out the be stones.
The apparent lump she has hopefully is either soft tissue (muscle) or some form of inflammation in nature and nothing more.
If she starts to worsen with any pain, I would immediately take her to the nearest ER.
Perhaps, try applying ice, then some heat to the affected area, alternating 20 on/off and see if they might help bring her some relief. Heat loosens things up a tad and also increases circulation. The ice reduces inflammation and acts as a numbing agent as well. Hopefully this will make her a bit more comfortable.
I dont think I was of much assistance to you, but I do hope she gets better soon. Please let us know what you all find out.
Hang in there. This is the part where being a parent stinks.. but just pamper her alot and watch her carefully until you can get her seen, and again, if she worsens at all, I would take her the nearest emergency care facilty.
All the best and happy upcoming new year. Tammy:wave:

Hi there,
I don't really have too much to add but I thought that no matter what your doc says on Tuesday you need to see someone and then preferably a orthopaedic surgeon. Wait and see what your GP says and go from there. However don't make light of the situation. Your doc may not take you seriously and may send you home and tell you to watch it for a week or so. Even though your daugther had x-rays a year ago, I strongly think she needs a new one and maybe even a ct scan.
For relief in the meantime, alternate heat and ice. I would take it easy as far as actvity levels and what not. You can never be too carefull. Take care and good luck. Beachgirl. ;)

I myself probably would just take her to the ER, where you can find out now!!

Thanks for your replies!!!
She was better yesterday, got through basketball practice on Friday night.
I do plan on calling her orthopedic surgeon on tuesday as well, to see what he has to say, he's treated her twice before...broken ankle and surgery last year for her knee, and he's great, he's been nothing less than wonderful to her for the past 2 years of treating her.
She hasn't had anymore symptoms come up, which is good....so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. She's got a slight curvature of her spine (scoliosis) but I don't believe it's in that area and as I said before, she had x-rays done last year and a specialist looked at everything, and we were told it's very mild, they'll watch her for another 2 years and make sure it doesn't worsen.
She's got a great GP, who never does the "wait and see" thing if there could be something going on....so I've got complete faith in him!
Will let you all know what they say next week.....this "unknown" stuff is scary...I can handle just about anything...but the not knowing....not fun!
Happy New Year !!!

Update.....
She saw the doctor, tore a muscle in her back, which knotted up...some PT and she should be okay....doc couldn't understand how she could be playing basketball with it, but like her knee....she's got a heck of a pain tolerance!
