View Full Version : Can Eye Surgeries "undo??"

KIDINSANITY

Hi all, I really need an answer if anyone can help me.

I had eye surgery in 1978, to correct a lazy eye. Now, all this time later, my eye seems a little puffy and appears to be starting to droop again. I also have alot of pain in the eye. This has been going on for 3-4 days now, but I haven't been able to get to a doctor. My ophthalmologist that I used to see is about 1500 miles away and is retired. I recently moved to another state, and hadn't the need to see one.

Is is possible that the surgery I had all that time ago is beginning to come undone? Or could it be something like a Bell's Palsy type of thing? I have some other issues that need attention, due to a possible blood clotting disorder, but I don't want to go to the ER with a proverbial list of ailments, no matter how serious or not serious they may be.

Thanks,

Sue

The results of strabismus surgery may not be long-lasting in some cases. My surgeon explained that the eye muscles are like the hardware of a computer, but it's the visual processing program in the brain (the software) that runs the show. So surgery can correctly re-position the eye muscles, but sometimes the software directs the eye back to its presurgery position. (In some cases, I think that vision therapy can help prevent this type of regression.)

I think you need to have your situation evaluated by an ophthalmologist, since it's not clear what's causing your problem.

Thanks for the info, Jodie. It wouldn't surprise me at all, considering how long it's been. Unfortunately, I can only see light and shadows, so I can't tell if my vision would have been affected and if it was just a realignment of the muscles/vision.
Thanks
