Hi I am wondering if anyone else has had a bleeding Ulcer my dad was just sent to the ER on thursday and they found out that he had a bleeding Ulcer. He had been feeling sick since after x-mas eve and then on thursday decided to call 911. So I am just wondering if anyone else has had something like this and if so are you on a special diet? I would love an answer to this.

How did he know? Was he bleeding from the bowel (black color) or stomach (throwing up). Did they do an endoscope on him. That would show it.

He probably will need to take a drug for acid like Nexium (expensive) or something else like that. Sometimes after an episode like this your blood count (white cells) can be really low and he might have to take iron for a while. Sometimes a person may need a transfusion if a lot of blood has been lost.
He may feel very tired for a long time.
As far as I know, you do not have to follow a special diet, just cut back on spices if they bother you.

Hi: Five years ago I became so exhausted I could hardly put one foot before the other. I also had black stools, very black. I thought I had cancer.
One day when I stopped at a store on the way to work, I had to sit down
twice and could not walk the length of the store. I drove myself to the emergency room where they found I was at a 4 on the anemic scale.
I was bleeding from an ulcer. The black stool was from old blood I was told.
No cancer. I had four transfusions and was hospitalized three days. They gave me no medicine and said the ulcer had healed itself over. No diet.
Just be careful of blood thinning medicine like aspirin. Within the fourth day after receiving all that blood, I immediately felt 75% better and within a week I was fine again.
Frankly, I always thought it strange that I got such little advice however so far I am still fine.
