I'm feeling a bit down just now. My son is now 7. Ever since he was a baby I have been buying him clothes with characters on them. Thomas, Bob The Builder, Postman Pat all I've wanted was for him at least once to point to the clothes with recognition. But he's not done this. He's just grown out of his last jacket of Bob The Builder which means he's moved from that age group. First babyhood, then toddler and now infant age is gone with little development. Does this mean he will never be able to link what he watches on TV with what he has on? Its so hard watching his 2 year old cousin jump with joy when she get anything from her favourite show Barney. Why me!

my son has NEVER associated what he had with what he sees on tv. he could can less. so we have moved on to picking out clothes that just really catch a bit of he personality. Isaac is 5 and is non verbal so it helps he to have a shirt that tells people a little bit about him.
he has a shirt that says "Gimme some space" with an alien on it:) it's cute and it tells people that he is different and funny and also doesnt want them in his face:)
he has a shirt that says "I love recess" with a depiction of a D+ on it:) our son is no genius with school but he does enjoy his recess.
he also has a shirt saying "teacher's pest" and one that reads "take a hike", depicting a wooded area because my boy loves the outdoors.
it can be a stab in the heart sometimes to loose those precious little childhood reactions to every little thing when you have an ASD kid but on the same token you have to remember to savor the person developing at their own special rate and way before you. i would just lay down and cry every day if i dwelled on the things Isaac never did so i just look at all the fun and quirky things he has done:D i live for his humor!:) and i think he is working on becoming the first non verbal insult comic:D just the other day, his home aide was working with him on a tooth brushing program and she got clever and decided to see what would happen if she let Isaac brush his own teeth. he looked at the tooth brush and then shoved it into HER mouth:) then he threw his head back and laughed hysterically before running off to play innocent and plan his next trick!
they may not care what they wear but they always have plenty to say. so i guess you best route would be to put clothes on your boy that feels like him:) that express his personality... with in reason... if isaac actually expressed himself through clothing he would probably be in jail... public nudity is still illegal here. Nude is his perferred outfit:)
keep your head up. and try not to spend too much time on fussing over it. because in the end your son isnt any less of a person for not caring what's on his shirt... he just male:D (hee-hee!)
