View Full Version : Bleeding after Cone

I hope someone can help me ASAP. I had a cone done on 12/14/06. Everything seemed fine until last night when I started bleeding more than I had been. I have been wearing panty liners every day since the procedure and have had very light bleeding every single day. Last night I actually bled through the liner. And now this evening I have already bled through 2 liners.

I know it's just a liner and doesn't really hold much but I am concerned for 2 reasons.

1) It's been 2 weeks since the procedure and the bleeding has just now gotten heavier.
2) It is bright red blood, not brown old blood.

I need some reassurance that this isn't too serious as I have a 2 year old (her b-day was today) and a 7 month old sleeping right now and my husband is out of town.

The EXACT same thing happened to me. I had a previously scheduled appointment with my GYN at 2-weeks post-op, and the night before I went, I started bleeding very heavily. It scared me. Anyway, she said that at two weeks post-Cone, the blood vessels are just regenerating, and that it is common to have some heavier bleeding. She said that the new vessels can have that effect. In my case, since I was in her office, she put some stuff on the cervix that stopped the bleeding. Can you get in to see your gyn? Mine was beginning to slow down by the time I went in to her, so maybe it would have stopped on its own, but I was happy that she was able to get it to stop entirely.

Sippy-

Thanks so much for responding. I hardly bled last night while sleeping, so I think I will see how it goes today before calling the dr. I go back 1/10/07 for my follow-up. I think I may have just over done it a bit the past couple of days while my husband has been gone and I've been doing everything myself.

Thanks for the reassurance.

Hi,

The same thing happened to me as well. I had very light brown discharge for about 2 weeks after my cone...then all of a sudden I started having heavy bright red bleeding. It was heavy for a week, then started tapering off. THe bleeding didnt completely end for about 3 weeks <ughhhhhhhh>, though it did get lighter as time went on. But I was told by my gyno ahead of time that this would probably happen. My hopital discharge instructions also noted this. My doc and the papers said if it seems to get excessivley heavy, or sudden painful cramping to call my doctor. For myself, I just waited it out. The worst was my doc wanted me to come in for an after procedure check-up 2 weeks after the cone. And it figures that is just when my heavy bleeding started. But she examined me anyway to make sure everything was healing well.
So it's probably normal, but it it's too heavy or concerns you too much, then call your doctor and let them know your concern.

Thank-you Baybreeze.

My dr had told me to expect bleeding no heavier than a period, but he didn't say how long to expect it for. Then when I was researching it online last night one website said bleeding should only last 1 week and another said it could last up to 6 weeks. Thanks for sharing your personal experience, it just seems so much more helpful than all the medical websites.

Can I ask you both what kind of follow-up you had to your cones? My path report stated that I have mod-severe dysplasia extending to the endocervical margin of resection of the cone. Now my gyn is suggesting that I have a hyst. Does this sound like standard treatment for my situation?

I don't know if hysterectomy is standard. My first GYN said that since I had carcinoma in situ (really severe dysplasia) I should "get used to the idea" of a hysterectomy. He did a LEEP, but basically let me know that a hyst was inevitable. I went to another GYN for a second opinion and she said she would do a cone (which I had) and that, in her opinion, the guy who told me I needed a hyst was off base. I also saw a gyn/onc who said that in my case, a hyst would have be VERY premature. I was relieved that I hadn't immediately gotten one done on my first doctor's advice, because the path after my cone was "wide, clear margins." So, I'm being long-winded, but my point is, I think lots of doctors go to hyst too early. Even if you love your current doctor, I'd think about getting a second opinion.

Thanks for the info Sippy.

After my cone the dr told me that he pretty much removed my entire cervix. He said that since I had 3 c-sections my cervix was not that big and he had to remove almost all of it. My path report states that "dysplastic cells extend to the endocervical margin." I guess he is saying that a hyst is next for me since there really isn't anything left of my cervix to try another cone. After my last baby I had my tubes tied and my dr knows this (obviously) so I guess he thinks that since I had already had that done that I shouldn't take any chances of the dysplasia coming back and just have the hyst done.

I really want to trust my dr and I truly believe he has my best interests in mind since my husband has done surgery on both he and his wife. My husband also thinks he did an excellent job with my c-section.

Any way, I have my follow-up this week and I will know more then. Thanks for your help.
