Is it just me or does anyone else come out horrible in pictures. Is this the way I really look or does it have to do with the lens on the camera. I look so damn good in the mirror but in pictures I come out horrible!!

I look so damn good in the mirror
That part made me laugh.
I don't know. Some people just turn out bad in pictures. Maybe it's the lens on the camera. Sometimes your skin looks paler or whatever. Or maybe it's because of a phoney smile. I've always wondered that. Who knows?

I know what you mean. There was a discussion on this before. Long story short---I was going to be a roomate with this girl when I was living in NYC several years ago. She was tall, thin, had great bone structure, light complected, had long pretty brunette hair, but was NOT at all attractive in person. BUT, turns out, she's a runway model. She showed me her portfolio---she looked extremely gorgeous in the pictures. But in person, she was rather bland and plain. In fact, some of her girlfriends were at her apt when I went to meet her and they were models too and looked very plain in person as well.
As for me, I'm not ugly, but pictures and camers do NOT like me!!! LOL I'm very expressive--facial expressive and the camera sure likes to capture my expressions. My husband has a poker face all the time and he always looks super great in pictures. Go figure. :)

lol thanks for the posts I feel better now. Ya I try not to smile in pictures cause' my pictures come out bad enough as it is. Have u ever heard that saying the camera puts on an extra 10 lbs. I'm starting to wonder if thats true. I'm not ugly but pictures just don't like me at all. Sometimes I can't stop looking in the mirror cause' I look so good in it. But cameras.. jeez put that thing away.
o and acuaticChick, ya I wrote that as a joke.. glad u caught it I was hoping someone would get a laugh out of that.

I agee with Infinitum; I am very expressive, and you can tell that I am looking somewhere else, twisting my mouth, looking angry, anything but posed for a photo. When I started dating my now-husband, he photographed wonderfully and I always looked like a comedienne with a goofy face! I really ruined many frameable photos. He stops, stares directly at the photographer (amateur or professional) and smiles. My youngest son is the same way...usually everyone has a dorky elementary photo...not him, he looks like an angel. I started noticing what people in my husband's family did to be photogenic and they stop and pose for the picture. I decided that I would practice this a bit, and it has helped. I can "pose" at home with my family, but I do feel a bit self-conscious around others and sometimes get caught with a smirk, or eye-roll. Practice with digital camera; then you can delete the goofy ones!

Um, well...I find that trying to "pose" results in the most horrible pictures of me. I too am really pretty but posed pictures of me usually turn out awful. However, I love candid shots of myself where I'm laughing, grimacing, talking or singing. I look very pretty and natural and happy. My best tip for being photogenic is to smile often, smile naturally and let the camera capture the moment...not a dull, fake knockoff of the moment.

I find that the flash on cameras sometimes make me look bad in pictures. I have to play around with my digital camera to get the coloring looking good. I find that using the night flash works best for some reason! The regular one that adjusts tends to make me look shiny or pale!! Also, no flash works well if there is enough light. I have a ****** and my ****** pictures always come out the nicest even though it's a $20 camera. They seem to come out more accurate and how I think I look in the mirror. Seems to happen to a lot of us. I know many people who think they look BETTER in their pictures than in real life, but I would rather look worse in the pictures and have it the other way around!

I have a few rules I go by if I'm caught on camera. First, I will not have my picture taken standing up, I'm either sitting down or I'll have it taken from the waist up. Second, I will wear a darker foundation. My regular stuff will make me look like a ghost in the flash. Third, to avoid the double chin, I will put my tongue on the roof of my mouth to 'suck' it in. Next, I will smile only slightly, grinning big will spread my cheeks out and make my face look bigger. Also, I won't ever have my pic taken head on. My face will be turned over my shoulder and/or my head tilted. Lastly, to make my neck look longer and my shoulders smaller, I will make sure my shoulders are down.

Don't worry. I know many a good-looking people who look like crap on pics.
They even sell special make-up to make you look more photogenic - cannot recall the name right now. It has a lot to do with light, the fact that it's a static image, etc.

It's called not being photogenic. :dizzy: I'd much rather be attractive in person than on a photo anyday! :D Such as what you described. However; if you want to improve your appearance on photos; try changing the way you pose or tilt your head. Maybe you have a beautiful big smile in person, but on photos may look like you're flashing way too many teeth...maybe you want to give a half or closed smile instead. These are just some small little tricks that can make a difference.
Remember, make-up, hair and clothes can make anyone look stellar...not everyone is blessed with natural beauty; so give yourself a pat on the butt for that! ;)

Ya the head tilting idea works for me too. I even ask whoever's taking my picture to turn off their flash!! lol I think that helps a little too.

So funny!
My boyfriend tryed to take some pictures of me using my new digital camera, and he just gave up after like 7 pictures. He was like, "what is wrong with you....why do you look like that in these pictures?"
Just recently on a picture community, I saw some pictures of a girl I know...
She really isnt attractive at all in person. However, these pictures of her look fab! She has people commenting on how hot she is and blah blah...But I know how she really looks.
As for me....no matter what I do, I look crazy. I usually think I am a little attractive, but after looking at a picture of me I want to cry and hide.
I think it has somthing to do with the size of your features and how the light lays on them.
I have larger features, wide-ish nose, big eyes, large lips..blah blah...and it really suits me well...but I noticed that more delicate features photograph better.

It all has to do with lighting and your own perception. You see, these cameras can bring out a lot of your imperfections. Ones you wouldn't notice from just looking into a mirror. Next time you take a picture try keeping your face perfectly still, expressionless. You should see a difference.
