I married into a family with a genetic defect that results in what is called May-Hegglin Anomoly. This is a blood cell disorder that results in dysfunctional platelets. My wife, my mother-in-law, many of my wife's relatives, and my two children have this. There is very little information about this disorder and I am hoping that someone can tell me more about it. It only rates a few paragraphs in hematology text-books which say that most patients live normal lives. However, my children have frequent and very prolonged nosebleeds. My wife and children bruise very easily and are covered in bruises. Strangely, during her pregnancies, my wife's platelet counts went up to low-normal values. What little I have read suggests that other blood cells are involved. My wife's family has a history of immune disorders, so I was wondering if this disorder might predispose people to immune problems. My mother-in law was diagnosed with Lupus but the diagnosis was changed to Scleroderma two years ago. My wife's uncle died of the disorder that killed Carl Sagen. One of her other uncles has arthritis and other immune problems that he won't discuss. Her cousin has discoid Lupus and other problems she won't discuss. (These people are not very open about what they see as personal problems.)
