I got my nails done just this past Friday and already (Sunday) they are starting to chip down by my cuticles. Is this normal?! I used to have acrylic nails (but no french) about 10 years ago and I don't remember them doing this. I called the salon back and they nail techs are out of town for the next few days. Should I insist that I get my money back?

That is definitely not normal. After a week I would say it's normal to have a little chipping, but certainly not after just two days.I have acrylic nails with the french maincure, but I get gel over it , which helps tremendously. It costs five dollars more, but it's well worth it. My manicure lasts me a full two weeks. I really doubt they'll give you your money back, but they may offer to redo them.I would show the owner of the shop as soon as you can get there. If they won't accommodate you, I would find a new salon.
Good Luck! :)

Mine also last two to two and a half weeks before I notice I need them filled. Like the PP, I get the $5 gel applied and it does help. There is a big difference from one nail salon to another. I would either ask for my money back or ask them to re-do them. If you are not satisfied, shop around. I have also found that it is difficult to find a good salon. You also just might want to consider having a different tech do them. At my salon I always request one of the same two people (the owner or his wife). They are fantasic.

Mine always last longer too.. that is normal to get the chipping at the bottom, but usually it happens later on! I would say to go to a different salon next time. The one I go to files the bottom part (with that electric file thing) and smooths it out a lot and it usually is at LEAST a week and a half and it's pretty minor. I can go about 3 weeks with the same set of nails. I do get solar nails though and solar has always come out better on me than the acrylics. The place I go to only costs a little bit more for the solar.

One time I did my nails myself with acrylic mix.. it was a kit I bought at the grocery store. It was only $8 and actually came out decent, but the bottom did start chipping VERY quickly, so I would try to go somewhere nicer.. seems like I didn't do the best job on them and I think it would work better if I had all the professional supplies. Plus it was my first time doing them with the powder and acrylic liquid.

Do you get the airbrush french? Im surprised salon's still do that since the white tips came out. The airbrush chips off in 1-2 days! I love gel nails........i find they last longer and i was having problems with the acrylics. Some of the products they use were burning mu cuticle's. I would either try the white tips..........or gel nails.

I have had my nails done for quite some time. The best solution for me was to have the solar nails (pink powder for the nail and white for the tip) All you have to do then is have the tech buff the nail and it shines as if it was polished clear. This is a great alternative to having polish. If your nails are starting to chip after such a short time says to me that the tech isn't filing them enough on the edges, not using a primer, or putting the acrylic too close to your cuticle. I have been told that is the number one cause of nails chipping or lifting. I would go to the salon as soon as possible and have them redone. Most salons won't give you a refund, but will redo them. If you continue to have the same problem, find another salon. Hope this helps!

Ok .. at 55 I've never had my nails done, that I can remember, but I called Wal-Mart today and the french manicures start at 26.00, sounds way to cheap, so what do I ask for when I go in? Just ask for a french manicure? Ask for gel nails? I'm going back to work around the 10th and will be doing alot of data entry so I'm keeping them short. Tired of every nail polish chipping after a few days. Anyway, dumb about this so just need to know what to tell them when I go in.:dizzy: Thx kj

French manicures chip very easily, so if you are doing alot of data entry work, I wouldn't recommend that. What you have done depends on the upkeep you are willing to do. If you do gel, acrylic or solar nails be prepared to go every 2 to 3 weeks and have them "filled". That is where they fill in the part close to your cuticle where your new nail has grow out. I have a small layer of acrylic placed over my own nails and it looks very natural. Sometimes I have polish and sometimes I just have the tech put clear on. It works for me. It's all about personal preference. What I would do is talk to the tech and ask questions about upkeep, strength, etc. You are paying for it....make sure you get what you want.

I agree that if you have acrylic nails that you should not have them chipping - especially at the base - in a few days. Natural nails - YEA! They chip in a few hours as norm. But as long as they put a decent top coat, etc. you shouldn't have that problem on acrylic.

However, I don't see that you mention how they did your nails - hand paint, tips, airbrush, etc. The manner in which the white was applied makes a difference too (at least to me!!)

I don't mind the the upkeep, judt what do I tell them I want?

AT this point I was just oing in and saying" iI need my nails dones, fench manicure" It's just trial and error. But the more info I get from here just nice to have when I go in. And I'm going to Wal-Mart...tomorrow. 01/05/2007

Thanks for all you replies! I went back to the salon on Tues and the tech offered to re-do them for me. I really didn't want her to do them again for fear that maybe it would happen again. If she did a lousy job the first time whats to say it would be any better the second time. I don't have the time to keep going back every few days to get them fixed. So I had her take them off and just do a regular manicure on my natural nails.

For those who were wondering, she used white powder for the tips and then used pink powder for the rest of the nail. She then put a clear coat (gel maybe?) and sent me on my way. They looked very pretty for about a day and a half! Anyway, thanks again for the help!
