Hi,
I've been suffering from daily headaches for years but the past few weeks they have been worse.I have pain in the right side of my head and it's always in the same place. To try to explain the pain as best i can it feels like someone is stabbing me.When the pain is at it's worse nothing makes it better whatever i do.Loud noises always hurt and make the pain worse so i'm constantly telling the kids to be quiet or turn the tv down etc.I don't know what to do and it feels like i'm going crazy! Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like tension headaches to me; most likely caused by stress. try excedrin migrain and if that's not strong enough then consider seeing a doctor.

Have you seen a doctor? Nurologist who specializes in headaches?
If yes to any of the above, did they prescribe any type of medications? If so, which ones?

If you are not under the doctors care, what type of over the counter meds have you tried?

Hi,
I've seen my GP about this but he hasn't said anything about me seeing a neurologist.I have tried all over the counter meds here in GB but none of them work for me.I've got to the stage where i just don't take them anymore. So i'm not currently taken any medication for them.

Did your doctor look into a sinus or ear infection? Another possibility is "Ice Pick Headaches" which gives you intermittent stabbing pain. For this kind of headache I take something called Indomethacin, which is an NSAID. You can look up "Ice Pick Headache". Also, you may want to ask to try an abortive like Zomig. Maybe you need to break the cycle. Sounds like you should look into finding a headache center in your area also. I find that GP's know only the basics about headaches.

Thank you for you replies.I looked at "ice pick headaces" and what they are discribing is not what i've got.The pain i've got is long lasting sometimes it's more severe than others.Being from GB i'm not familiar with the med Zomig is it an OTC med? I made an appointment with my GP for Friday.

Have you talked to your GP about possibly getting some imaging studies done? I have headaches on one side and always in the same spot also, on almost a weekly basis if not more often than that and I am going to see my doc soon about getting a CT Scan or (preferrably) an MRI to see if there is anything there.

Best of luck.

Hi Newportgirl! I don't want to get you excited, but I had severe headaches everyday for about 16 months until the doctors finally found my problem with a CT Scan. I had a deep sinus infection that had taken over my entire head. I had all of the symptoms of a migraine (light and sound made it worse, even movement of any kind), vision problems, throwing up, headaches waking me from a dead sleep, and even my teeth began to hurt. By the time they found the infection it had spread into my maxilofacial nerves. That is why my teeth and gums began to hurt. I took an extreme regiment of antibiotics for two months straight, and I have rarely had a headache since!:) I am so sorry you are going through this. People in my life thought I was either going to die, or that I had lost my mind. Honestly, my husband and I thought I had a brain tumor or something. It was the worst thing I have ever experienced in my life! I truly feel for you....please keep posting your progress. I am very eager to know if this is what you have. In the meantime, try using a saline wash in your nose, and a washrag with water as hot as you can stand on your face. Also, putting some type of analgesic (I use Theragesic) on your upper neck or very, very lightly on your "T-zone" on your face may help. (Never use an analgesic right out of the shower though. It will burn your skin horribly!) Good luck with your CT Scan - I hope you get it sooner rather than later!

Breathing helps when you get fed up with tablets. Do the following breathing exercises known as Yoga Pranayam and your headache will gradually disappear. You will notice results from day one.

Bhastrika - Take a long deep breath into the lungs(chest not tummy) via the nose and then completely breathe out through the nose.Upto 5 minutes daily.

Anulom Vilom - Deep Breath-in through left nostril keeping right nostril closed
then - Breath-out through right nostril keeping left nostril closed
then -Deep Breath-in through right nostril keeping left nostril closed
then - Breath-out through left nostril keeping right nostril closed
and repeat this cycle for upto 15 minutes twice a day. (maximum 60 min per day).
Tips : Breathe into lungs not into stomach. Do not hurry. Do it slowly. Rest whenever needed (in any pranayam). Can be done in sitting position, standing or lying in bed(if bed-bound).Keep tissues handy, as a lot of mucous from lungs will be coming through the nose.
Pranayam is about getting more oxygen into the lungs and sending it around the body via blood to aid in body repair. With extra oxygen more platelets and red blood cells are formed to build up the immune system.Extra fat is burned to reduce weight. All this happens naturally without side-effects.People with all types of ailments including incurable ones will benefit. This has been simplified by Ramdev so all can do it.
If you need clarification please ask.

I have been diagnosed with ice pick migraines. It is a stabbing pain which actually started in my ear and now I get them in my head. They are brief stabbing pain at the nerve endings. I have been to 2 neurologists and I'm now taking 2 different nerve pain meds. I take Lyrica and Celebrex. It's helped somewhat - I still get them but not as often. You should see a neurologist. Good luck and feel better.
