I had my Subtalar Fusion on April 28, 2006. I have never has Physical THerapy. I am still in a walking brace, that I wear with a shoe. I am still only able to walk for about 10 minutes, before I begin to swell badly. I am not sure if this is normal? I was wondering if anyone has had this surgery, and if they have experience the same? I also have RA.

I had a triple fusion. I think that I walked after eight months. It wasn't easy but I did. I think you should talk to your dr. about Physical Therapy. It helps a lot. Is is painful? What kind of brace do you have?

I have had a couple midfoot fusions (never subtalar) and the recovery time was generally 9 months. I did get pt after the bones were fused and I think the pt was really, really important. You might want to ask your os about pt, especially if you are having a lot of swelling.

Just curious, what was the reason for your subtalar fusion?

I had subtalar joint fusion on my right foot 8/23/06. I still have swelling, and am in pain. My doctor now says he may have to go in and remove the screws and the bone may not be fused. I return to the dr in one week. Anyone else have to have surgery twice, or swelling and pain for so long. Is there an alternative to another surgery?

I had my subtalar joint fused in October, along with a lot of other procedures. I am already out of every brace and walking. Yesterday I was even able to jog a little. I do remember that when I had my other foot done last year, it was a good six months before the swelling was completley gone. I would be a little concerned if you are still swelling from April. I would see if your doctor could give you a prescription for therapy. It worked wonders for me, and the therapists are able to give you an objective opinion. Just make sure you go to a good place. Make sure they are "hands on" therapists, and for feet, a sports therapist is even better. Hope this helped some.
