my youngest son (of five siblings) is 31. when he was 19 he became almost totally deaf. we thought he was just ignoring us! but he couldn't hear, and was becoming more and more depressed by the condition. he wasn't living with me then, but i FORCED him to go to a number of specialists, who finally diagnosed him with classic otosclerosis in both ears. they said that this condition, (which i can't believe i never heard of before) is quite common, and my son fit the "age bracket" in which it usually occurs; late teens and early twenties.

he had both ears implanted with a titanium replacement for the stapes bones. the surgeries were done 6 months apart. it was a totally successful surgery, both times. he can hear just fine, more than ten years later. he is, of course, extra careful to wear ear protection in his job around huge and sometimes noisy machines, at an airplane-parts fabrication facility.

dianne in eastern WA where the ENT doctor who did my son's surgery is practicing.

You can add me to thepile:
Both ears over a 25 year period starting when deafness got too difficult to live with at about age 30.

I hear very well, much better than my peers.

I am happy to see that some people had success from having surgery for Otosclerosis. I had the surgery several months ago removing a stape and replacing it with titanium, my hearing did change from having this surgery. After several post op visits with the doctor he said he was sorry the surgery was a failure. I was told I fall in that 10% category of people that have this surgery and it doesn't work. But the doctor was considerate enough to offer to do another surgery and try again. I told him no way was he doing surgery on me again. This Doctor was suppose to be one of the best in the Chicago area.

My wife is considering stapedectomy as well, and we are in the NW Suburbs of Chicago. Who was the doctor that performed your procedure? Aside from the lack of improvement, did you suffer any other ill effects from the surgery? Did your hearing get worse, or is there any new pain or tinnitus to speak of? Can anyone else share their experiences (good or bad) with otologists in the NW Suburbs of Chicago? Thanks in advance...

I have been recently detected with otosclerosis and considering Stapedectomy. I live in the NW suburbs of IL. Can any one suggest a specialist from this area?

Thanks

I've had both ears done 25 years apart...both successful. My hearing is now far better than all my aging peers. :D
