im a 22 year old female and i was diagnosed with epilepsy in jan of 1997 i have noticed that every once in a while i have problems with my left arm and hand about the only way i can describe it is if you have ever seen and elderly person that has had a stroke and are paralyzed on the left side how sometimes there hand will turn in and kinda look like it is in a claw form .i get this everyonce in while well i guess usually once a day and it will last anywhere from a few minutes to a couple hours i thought maybe it was a side effect of the meds for a while but after being taken off of everything i still have this and it only effects my left arm and hand my drs have yet to be able to tell me what it is or what is causing it because she has never seen it however when i was in the hospital after having an amblatory eeg taken off the eeg tech seen it and it kinda freaked her out she said she had never seen anything like it before does anyone have any ideas what this might be??

it happened once when my seizures were really bad. it was kind of locked in that position, tight, no way could u move it back. kind of affected the whole arm, it was bent in an unusual position, and a claw hand. it took a couple hours to go away. it never happened again.

Could it be a complex partial seizure?

Hi - my daughter Rebecca has the same thing - left side weakness with her hand turned in and her leg dragging somewhat. It happens after alot of seizing but thankfully she regains the strength again each time. To me, it looks like - stroke like symptoms, but Dr's confirm it is not a stroke. I'm not so sure it isn't mini mini mini ones that they cannot verify, but that the seizing is showing another way of taking its toll on her 85 lb body. Was interesting to read someone else experiencing similar. Yes she has lots of complex partials and tonic clonic.......till next time........Paula

I have no idea why it happened, i had smaller ones, claw like hands, but that night, oh it was really bad- my arm was so disformed. all I can say I was in the thick of having really bad grandmals that werent controlled yet. now that they are better controlled it went away. (())))

Could be Todd's paralysis? this is a temporary condition that causes no harm, but does provoke anxiety. It can be a hand or leg, but also can be half the body. Some folks find it lasts a short time, but I have heard of some who can have it for a few days...

I have the same problem. Have you ever taken the drug Keppra?? After being on Keppra I lost the use of the right side of my body. Everyone looked at me like I had a stoke because that's how I looked. Like I had had a major stroke. Shortly after having this reaction to the drug I did have a stroke. It has been 2 1/2 years and I am still on a crutch and have nerve damage in my right arm not to mention many other problems. I would love to know how you are doing now. Well I hope!!

I agree with Kayakmom...it may be Todd's paralysis. After each of my seizures I suffer from it. I have been paralyzed on one side for as long as a half hour. It is scary, but it does end. My Neurologist told me that it CAC last for months, so I'm not complaining. The biggest fear I have is having a seizure while I'm in a difficult place to remain for so long, like in a store etc. But, I'm fortunate in that I have a few minutes of advanced notice and hopefully will be able to find a safe place whenever I have a seizure. Good luck! Kathy

I had the same thing for a while, and I never really figured out where it came from... Could have been Todd's paralysis, could have been the Keppra I was on at the time, who knows? My neuro flipped out, though, thinking that it was TIAs. Had an MRA done, and I came out smelling like a rose - no stroke in sight.

Scary stuff, though, I have to agree with that... It scared me into quitting smoking, so it did SOME good at least :-)
