View Full Version : Any way to straighten teeth with a partial?

Hey All-
I have a partial denture that I got in October. The partial covers the back of my teeth ( I have all 4 front teeth). What has happened is the hooks in the front of the partial have pushed back 2 of my 4 front teeth back, causing a weird space and moving 2 of the teeth back, while 2 of the teeth that arent in contact with the hooks remain in the same spot . My question is, does anyone know of any way that I might be able to straighten these teeth again? I know its a complicated yet weird question but I thought if anyone would know it would be the people on here. It's something I can live with, but the other teeth just look so great it makes my 4 real teeth look so bad, especially in pictures...any suggestions?

Hi young one

I was just wondering how you are doing with your partial denture, I read your posts back in october and it seems you are doing much better, i was just wondering can you eat everything you did before, I am gonna have to get one also and was just wondering about how it was to eat and you said something about the clasps, where do they go exactly, I will be getting an upper partial with 3 teeth, the cosmetic kind I hope, I dont want those metal ones, I am very concerned about people noticing like you did, I am very vain and very self conscious of things like this. Did you go to a regular dentist to get yours or did you go to a cosmetic dentist?

PS.. i am also in my 20s!!

I would see an orthodontist to see if there are options for you.

Hi Skittles!

Yes, I am doing very well with my partials-I can eat anything and everything (including gum and steak), and no one can even noticed at all, including guys I've made out with (haha!). At first I was really nervous and scared, but now I've accepted it and realized that it really is not that big of a deal and its all how you carry yourself and the confidence you have about yourself. It's definitely scary and I'm not going to lie about it and tell you isnt, but you will get through it, and if you need anything, you can post here.

As far as the hooks and stuff, they are positioned on one of the front teeth, mine are on the 2 side teeth that part part of my front 4. I'm having a little problem with the hooks pushing these 2 teeth back and my front 2 still being a little more forward, but its not even a big deal, so it's nothing I'm stressing about, I'd like to get it fixed, but its not a priority.

Post more questions if you need any help! What happened that you need to get a partial?

Hello,
What are your partials made of? I know there are different kinds, metal and plastic, i definitley do not want the metal kind. Does yours have a name, is it Valpast or something? Also, you mentioned there are clasps, are they made out of metal?? I am getting a partial from root canals that have failed and had to be taken out. I need 2 upper teeth and implants are so expensive and very invasive!!, You said it felt like a retainer? I have seen some pictures on the internet and some of them look like they just are suctioned or something to your gums, and others do have clasps, I am confused! Did you see a cosmetic dentist or just a general dentist?

Every part of my denture is plastic from the plate to the hooks (and they match your gum color so you cant even see them!!!). I believe that my dentures are made of valplast plastics. I saw a general dentist but I emailed a couple of specialists who agreed what I did was best (genetically I did not have 5 adult teeth and cannot afford implants, so this was the only way to go!). Mine feels exactly like a retainer (actually I think a retainer might feel worse!) Mine attaches with hooks in the back to my molars and the hooks in the front are kinda just anchors, but none of them are metal, all plastic and you cannot see them. My dentist even suggested in the beginning that he could cut the hooks if they really bothered me. I had sore spots so you have to watch for that, but your dentist will be totally cool with it and he can easily adjust it. The ones with suctioned I believe are ones for people that dont have back teeth (so the plate cant be anchored) or are full partials. Where are the two teeth that you're getting pulled-are they both on opposite sides of each other?
As far as caring for them, there are days I take them out when I sleep and days I sleep with them in, especially when I'm not sleeping at home; I've read all you really need is 15 minutes to take them out to clean them. No one can honestly tell. My smile looks even better then it did before- I look at pics from before, and I'm what!

If you go on [Removed], and then click on photos, you will see something called a Valplast Flexible Partial---that is what mine looks like. You can see how its all plastic, as are the hooks.

Hope this helped :)

hello young one, I think I understand now, do you have a partial denture on both sides of your mouth or just one partial denture on one side? My problem is a little different because I do not have a molar tooth and I am missing my 2 back molars so i am not sure how it will stay securely in. The teeth have already been pulled, I just really need it for cosmetic purposes because I am so scared someone will notice them missing. Also how much do you they cost, I mean just a ballpark range, my dentist told me about impllants but they are not affordable and take way too much time. Thank you so much for your time on this.

Hey---I have one partial that is like a plate across my mouth because I'm missing teeth on both sides of my mouth (uppers). Are you just missing on one side? In that case you will be getting a unilateral denture...is that what you are getting? that is different then what i have.

With extractions and the denture, I paid about 900 bucks, but my dentist was VERY nice to me and didnt charge me for everything he normally would because I'm such a unique case.

Just on one side of my mouth im missing 2 back molars. but i am just wondering how it will stay in since i dont want any of those metal hooks. Did your:) teeth next to the partial need to be crowned or anything?? 900 is not alot at all including extractions and u have 5 teeth, that is alot cheaper than implants.

i wanted to ask you one more thing, so yours is like a plate that goes across the roof of your mouth, i know you mentioned kissing, i am so scared about that, can you feel it when your kissing a guy???

Haha---we are too alike, I had the same questions and worries!!!!!!!! Well, you dont kiss with your teeth, so your guy shouldnt notice! If he does, its up to you whether or not to tell him what it is or tell him something else (like its an expander or something!) To be honest with you, I havent had any complaints since I've gotten the thing and I've made out with some people, honestly I don't think they can even notice and it's really how you carry yourself about it. If you get all shy and nervous about it and make it a big deal, then it will be; if you dont and dont brush it off, then it wont be a big deal. I mean, I couldnt help it, it was genetic, and yours happened to you because of bad root canals not because of you not brushing your teeth. Honestly, there can be a lot worse things and I've slowly been learning that this is not the end of the world. You will be fine! I dont know how it stays but it does, and you wont need glue or anything, trust me, the way they build these things they stay on your gums!

Oh also you dont need to have metal hooks, mine are plastic and are not noticeable!
