View Full Version : Troubled about need for lenses

An eye doctor identified mild farsightedness and astigmatism when I was 17. No need for glasses at the time. Now I'm pulling my head back to look at anything within three feet of my face. My arm is becoming too short to compensate.

I'm 34 and hesitant to schedule an eye exam again because I know it's time for a prescription. I've tried the store brand lenses and am annoyed that, while they help me read and do close work, I have to refocus when looking back up. Store-bought lenses also give me a headache. My eye problem is milder than most who wear corrective lenses, so I'm not complaining about the condition.

I just want to know: Does the dizzying refocusing issue go away? Will lenses I don't wear all the time not allow me the adjustment that will alleviate headaches? Will postponing the eye appointment worsen the situation?

Worst case scenario: the refocusing problem can be an early sign of cataracts, due to the rigidity of the lens. I had that.
A simple eye exam will tell whether you are starting to develop cataracts.
Even if you are, you are probably a decade or two away from needing surgery. Progressive lenses or bifocals would probably bring things into focus in the mean time. But I was very near-sighted, which is very different.

Another possibility: It might just be the uncorrected astigmatism making it harder to focus.
An optometrist will know what is the cause, either way.

With so many cute, comfortable frames on the market, shopping for glasses is fun.
My daughters wear contacs, and you can't even tell they're wearing anything at all--I'm the only one with red eyes (from chronic dryness), and I don't (can't) wear contacs.

So, high-tail it to an optometrist, and if you decide to get glasses, enjoy shopping around before you lay your money down. ;)

Thanks a bunch, seriousperson!

Your message makes me feel a lot better. I'm not so hesitant about the appointment now.

Thanks again!:D
