Hi All
I must post this. I had a stroke over two years ago. Lost my walking, swallowing, and feeling on my left side. Things got better over the first six months or so. I learned to walk and swallow again.
Just this week, I gained some feeling back in my face. Not much. But its there.
I just wanted to tell everyone about this. That there is hope, even after years things still come back, and not to give up.

Hi,
I had a stroke in October 2002, when I was 55 years old with a good job. I was totally paralyzed on my right side. I had about 3 months in-patient therapy, and 2 months outpatient therapy.
I was told I probably would walk with a cane, but several doctors told me I would never have function of my right arm and hand. I told them I don't accept their prognosis. I might add that I am a right-handed person, so that made it even worse. I had to learn to write and do things with my left hand.
I regained most of my disability problems in the 2nd to 3rd year and am still seeing improvement in the 4th year.
Doctors don't know first hand from experience, but we do as survivors. Don't listen when they say after a certain amount of time their is no more advancement, or one has met their plateau, NOT TRUE!
The mind is very powerful. If one has a strong will, encouragement, determination, and a positive attitude, you can accomplish almost anything. A lot of prayers doesn't hurt either.
I am happy to say, after 4 years, in addition to doing alot of functions I could not do with my right hand, about 80% has come back. I still can't write with my right hand but I'm working on that. As to my walking, from what was paralysis in a wheelchair, I'm walking with a single cane outdoors, nothing indoors. And I'm happy to say I'm driving again now about four months.
Hope this gives encouragement to all.

Yes. i just had to reply to this. five years since my stroke and i am still improving. the first year was a nightmare, but now am nearly how i was.
I still sleep alot, ten hours a night, but i feel my body needs to.
When i had the stroke i was told improvement in the first year was the best i could expect. This was so wrong!.
Now am looking for an exercise plan that will help me regain my strengh.
Best wishes.

Hi:
I had a stroke in August 2003. I was 45 at the time and lost the use of my left side and was confined to a wheelchair for 3 months. Currently have partial use back in my left hand and wear a brace on my left leg to help me walk. I have drop foot and my knee snaps back when I walk. I have improved over the years and it's really encouraging to know that I can still improve. I am working hard on my own to get better with no physiotherapist or O.T. and I am determined to get full use back in both my arm and leg if it takes me another 4 or 5 years. Perserverance, determination, a great deal of stubbornness and a lot of prayer have got me to where I am today. You can accomplish anything when you put your mind to it. Cheers all.:)

To Magiclady,
I posted earlier but I am with you. Never say never, and doctors don't know everything. Especially when they say during the first 18 months you that's it.
Like you I am 4 1/2 years now after my stroke which afftected my right side,
leg, arm, hand and a trace with my speech & face. The face and speech became perfect after only 3 months. I'm about 80-90% with everything else. It wasn't until the start of 3rd year and still improving today.
By the way, I got 95% of my strength back in my hand and arm by going to the gym I joined almost 3 years ago. My doctor suggested it and it was the best suggestion he could have given me. I only pay $35 a month, can go as much as I want, whenever I want. I have loads of equipment there and it also became a social event.
I met many people there in the same predicament as I was. Some had strokes, others knee and hip replacement, even others with MS. It's not only good for the exercising we need, but also good for the mind.

Thanks for taking time to post! This is SO important and good to hear. What were your deficits? Did you have any hemiplegia, arm/hand weakness, etc.?
thanks!

My stroke ocurred Dec. 26th 2007. It affected the left side of my face with numbness and the right side of my body from torso down to toes with numbness. I had no muscular-motor disability.Gradually the numbness receded but a hot-cold,tingling pain developed in my entire left leg and to a lesser extent in my right arm. The leg pain imposes a feeling of shock, trauma, and stress upon me.I held off taking pain killing drugs to see if the pain would gradually reduce, but it did not. So, recently I sought pain relief by taking drugs.I tried Lyrica. This made my leg Pain feel more intense,so I stopped taking it. I switched to Ultram. This drug relieved the feeling of stress, somewhat, but did not reduce the leg pain. It shut my lower digestive tract down making me constipated.I gave up taking Ultram ,as well.
Right now I'm off of drugs and conclude there are no worthwhile nerve-pain killing drugs in the market.Asprin has no effect, either.
I feel like crap. But if you say there is hope of pain relief recovery as far out as three to five years, this provides me with re-assurance. I hate to go on with the rest of my life feeling the way I do. Thanks for lifting my spirits.
