as you may know, we were just diagnosed 12/22 with pdd nos i have a question my son lucas is 3yr 10 months and has an expressive speech delay. He does speak alot. he has a good vocabulary (meaning he knows alot of words) but doesnt enunciate or pronunciate correctly. he also isnt putting together complex sentences. just things like wanee food for i want food. very few times does he string more that 3 words together. he still says alot of "jibberish" in between words, like a jargon, or a language he made up. but to my trained ear, i can usually try to figure out what he wants or is trying to say. a lot of pointing helps, and alot of asking him to repeat. if he is in a good mood he will repeat if not he gets frustrated and can have a "meltdown" or tantrum as i call it. when he repeats things (on command) he will repeat it exactly the same way. it's as if he know what he is saying and doesnt realize it is being pronounced wrong or it just "jibberish or jargon". he doesnt know how to say things like he couldnt say my shoes hurt if asked why he took them off. or if i ask what he wants to eat he just says chicken, fries or juice or cookie (these words seem to indicate that he is hungry and not necessarily that he wants these exact things) doesnt know how to say if he doesnt feel good or if his shoes hurt for example. he'll do alot of "mirroring" like i call it, for example if he is fussing with his shoes i'll ask do your shoes hurt? he'll answer shoes i guess they hurt or he'll say no,no, no, no and i know they dont etc.
a social worker mentioned that sometimes pdd nos is changed into one of the other pdds after age 5, she suggested maybe aspergers, as he seems to be very intelligent, understand what you say, but selectively "ignores" you and tries very intently to communicate, he just has no idea we cant understand him most of the time. began speaking the usual words at 8-9 months, dada, mama 's juice by 12 months etc, he just seem to progress his speech very slowly. does any one have any feed back/opinions could it be asperger's
